Description: The Cherokee materials in the ACLS collection consist of 3 sets of material located in the "Cherokee" section of the finding aid. The smallest item is Frans Olbrechts' brief essay comparing Cherokee and Ethiopic (Ge'ez) syllabaries (item I2.1). Zellig Harris and John Witthoft's "Cherokee materials" (item I2.4) was conducted in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania and consists of grammatical Vocabularies and utterances, extensive grammatical notes and analyses, and numerous ethnographic and autobiographical stories, plus some songs, recorded on phonograph discs with Molly Sequoyah (mainly) and Will French. A small number of texts are written in the Cherokee syllabary as well. A second linguistic study by William Reyburn (item I2.3), conducted in Cherokee, North Carolina, consists of 1000+ pages of linguistic notes, transcriptions of recordings, and analyses, plus an extensive lexical file organized according to morpheme class. Reyburn's accompanying recordings are cataloged as Mss.Rec.16, "Cherokee materials gathered...on the Cherokee reservation at Cherokee, N.C.," listed separately in this guide.

Description: The Cherokee materials in the Lounsbury Papers is found primarily in several sections of the collection. Series I contains correspondence with a number of people on Cherokee language and culture. These correspondents include Harry Basehart, William Cook, William Fenton, John D. Gillespie, Mary Haas, Jack Kilpatrick, John Witthoft. In Series II, see the "Cherokee" section, which contains 3 boxes of research materials, including Lounsbury's field notes with numerous Cherokee speakers in Oklahoma, copies of original notes by other linguists, language instruction materials, and other related documents. The "General Iroquois" section contains some comparative materials as well, as may other sections to smaller degrees. Series VI contains multiple boxes of card files with Cherokee language data in the form of lexicons and texts in translation. In Series VII, there are several audio recordings, including a reading of Private John G. Burnett's eyewitness account of Cherokee removal, 1838-1839, and a significant number of recordings of songs and dances made by Will West Long and Della Owl, and Cherokee lessons by Robert Bushyhead and William Cook.

Description: The Hidatsa materials in the Frank Siebert Papers can be found in two sections. In "Series XII: Recordings," there is 1 shellac phonograph disc, "Hidatsa: a Siouan language: Water Buster account," pressed by the Indiana Historical Society, 1939, which contains a recording by speaker Charley Snow made in 1911. In "Series VII: Works by Others," there are reprints of two articles, one by R.H. Stetson, and one by C.F. Voegelin.

Description: The Mohawk materials in the Lounsbury Papers are primarily found in the "Mohawk" section of Series II: Research Subject. This section contains materials Lounsbury recorded directly with Mohawk speakers from Kahnawake such as Minnie Diabo and Louise Diabo, who Lounsbury appears to have first met via the Mohawk community in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The section also contains notes by Gordon Day, Marius Barbeau, J.N.B. Hewitt, and others. There are also notes for a Mohawk dictionary collected by Gunther Michelson between 1961-1994. The recordings in Series VII include a series entitled "The Mohawks Learn Mohawk," of Lounsbury talking with students in a classroom setting. There are also recordings of Lounsbury teaching at Yale with the Mohawk speaker Minnie Diabo

Description: There is a significant amount of Shawnee material in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Materials are in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there are 4 boxes of Shawnee note cards (mostly vocabulary) and 2 folders of document notes (mostly linguistic notes, regarding transitive verbs, stems, phonology, etc.) in Series II. Card Files. Subseries III-A: Works Translated by Voegelin of Series III. Works by Voegelin contains two Shawnee texts that were translated and/or linguistically analyzed by Voegelin and which served as the basis of publications by Voegelin in the early 1950s: "Shawnee Episodes" (5 folders) and "Shawnee Laws" (44 folders of material) [see the finding aid for detailed descriptions of these materials]. Subseries III-B: Works Authored by Voegelin (also of Series III) contains files labeled "Basic Shawnee" and "Shawnee Morphology." There is a folder of linguistic notes (including a story in English) in "[Shawnee?]" and a list of tribal names in "Shawnee" in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A. Language Names. There is a file of "Unique Shawnee Texts" containing Mary Williams' responses to "English Through Pictures" in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-B: Texts. There are 37 Shawnee notebooks in Series VI. Notebooks. The notebooks date to 1934 and primarily contain texts, including many about the life of a consultant identified as F. D., "the way it used to be," and the way life was more recently in 1934 in Oklahoma. Most of the notebooks are accompanied by handwritten notes and typescripts of transcriptions in Shawnee and translations in English. Shawnee is also represented on the language maps created for Voegelin's publications on Algonquian languages in Series VII. Photographs, and there is a reel of Shawnee audio recording (a reading of the transcript of "Shawnee Laws") in Series VIII. Description: The Tuscarora materials in the Lounsbury Papers include a dictionary by Chief Elton Greene, J.N.B. Hewitt's Tuscarora version of the Seneca Cosmology, and Blair Rudes's notes as he was developing his Tuscarora Dictionary in Series II. The recordings in Series VII include Lounsbury's work with Tuscarora speaker and teacher Marjorie Printup, which includes work on grammar, stories with explanations, Christian phrases, pedagogy, and reminiscences, etc. Also included are a significant number of tapes Lounsbury made with Tuscarora speaker Nellie Gansworth, many unidentified.

Description: The Wintu materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers are extensive. Subcollection I, Series I, contains notes, notebooks, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and phonetic tracings by Jeremiah Curtin in the late 19th century, Roland Dixon, and A.M. Halpern. Series I-B contains Pitkin's grammar slip files and vocabularies collected by Curtin. Series I-C includes Jaime de Angulo's manuscript on the Patwin language, S.A. Barrett's transcriptions and translations of speech and song recordings, Radin's "Grammatical Sketch" and Waterman's notes on Patwin phonetics. Series II-A is rich in materials collected by A.L. Krober. In Subcollection II, Pitkin's field notes are located in Series 2, Subseries 1. Subseries 2 includes Pitkin's extensive notes on his Wintu dictionary, grammar, texts, stories, and music. The manuscript of the dictionary is located in Subseries 3. There is an unpublished 416 page manuscript of stories written in both English and Wintu, songs, and transcriptions in Subseries 4. This section also includes copies of all the extant linguistic material with works by noted linguists such as Curtin, Albert Gatschet, Radin, Halpern, Morris Swadesh, Victor Golla, and J.P. Harrington. Series 6 is comprised of card file slips with comparative analyses by Pitkin of the four languages of the Wintun family.
