Description: The Ditidaht materials in the ACLS collection are found in the "Nitinat" section of the finding aid. The bulk of the material consists of field notebooks (item W2b.2, "Nitinat field notebooks") recorded by Mary Haas and Morris Swadesh primarily from Chief Peter (Batlisqawa) and his son Jasper of Port Renfrew in 1931. The notebooks include numerous texts of traditional stories, histories, autobiographical stories, and other content including place names, vocabularies, and grammatical notes. A full table of contents of these notebooks is available. An extensive lexical file of over 6700 terms, derived from these field notebooks, is also found in this collection as item W2b.1, "Nitinat lexical file". See the Ditidaht materials in the Mary Rosamond Haas Papers (Mss.Ms.Coll.94) for additional notebooks and photographs recorded during this fieldwork.

Description: The most noteworthy aspect of Mary Haas' Ditidaht file, stemming from fieldwork conducted with Morris Swadesh as her first fieldtrip, is a fairly detailed transcription of songs collected. Series 2 contains the transcriptions and Series 10 the cassette copies, while the original tapes are housed at the Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music. There is much overlap with Nuu-chah-nulth, as Haas frequently identified correspondences between them. A sizeable lexical file (Series 9) and correspondence with many, especially Edward Sapir and George Herzog (Series 1) may also be of interest.

Description: Mary Haas' Makah file appears to be mostly derived from work by William Jacobsen, who frequently assisted Haas with developing her collection throughout her life. These include correspondence (Series 1 and 2) and parts of lexica, often compared with Ditidaht and Nuu-chah-nulth especially. The largest lexicon is in Series 9, from work by Leo Frachtenberg and Morris Swadesh, at around 1000 slips.

Description: Three items relating to the Nuu-chah-nulth and Ditidaht [aka Nitinat] languages of the Nuu-chah-nulth culture have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Voegelin and his contemporaries designated this culture and its language as "Nootka," which is reflected in the finding aid. In Subcollection I, there is a copy of Terry J. Klokeid's "Linguistic Acculturation in Nitinat" (1968) in Series IV. Works by Others. Both other "Nootka" items are located in Subcollection II. They consist of "Nootka" material in correspondence with Morris Swadesh in Series I. Correspondence; and a "Nootka" folder in Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries I: General works.

Description: The Wakashan materials in the ACLS collection consist of materials in the "Wakashan" section of the finding aid assembled by Sapir and Swadesh from earlier fieldwork materials. The materials in this section are all comparative vocabularies and analyses of mutiple Wakashan languages, primarily Nuu-chah-nulth, Kwak'wala, and Ditidaht. Distinction between these languages will be more apparent in the materials in themselves. See also the separate listings in this guide specifically for Ditidaht, Kwakwaka'wakw, and Nuu-chah-nulth materials.
