Description: This journal of Moravian missionary John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder covers travels among the Indians to a conference in Detroit in 1793. Includes a list of the names of different Indian nations in North America, their locations, and number of fighting men. Also contains miscellaneous materials: a letter from Heckewelder to Mordecai Churchman, October 5, 1819, mentioning Peter S. Du Ponceau; engraving of Heckewelder possibly from a painting at the American Philosophical Society; a 1-page letter of Maria Heckewelder to Matthew S. Henry requesting him to relinquish the volume; and some Heckewelder letters. Originals at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Description: The Klamath materials in the William Fenton audio collection are located in "Series 8: Klamath Indian Political Texts" and on the first tape in "Series 9: Blackfoot Songs and Dances (plus 1 Klamath tape)." Recordings are "Klamath Tribal Council History," "Treaty of 1864 with Klamath Indians" (including song and discussion of Klamath music), both with Tom Lang; "Conversation on Klamath singing, with one song" and "Conversation on healing and songs" with Ellen Hecote; and Fenton's "Reading of notes on the beginning of factions on the Klamath Reservation" and "Reading of notes on Watson Duffy." Includes some information on Paiute and Fenton's reading of notes on interviewees David Chocktoot and Watson Duffy. Description: "Letters and documents relating to the government service of Jasper Parrish among the Indians of New York State," compiled and edited by Mrs. Dorothy May Fairbanks Newton, 1940. This Vassar College student thesis contains text written by Newton, transcriptions of letters to and from Parrish [aka Parish, an Indian agent and interpreter] and other documents, and 54 letters and 5 maps pertaining to Indian affairs in New York State. Newton used primary documents found in Vassar College's Jasper Parrish Papers Collection. Originals of both thesis and the primary documents it is based on are at Vassar College.

Description: The Makah materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items in the "Makah" section of the finding aid. Boas' "Makah lexicon" (item W2c.1) consists of 738 cards arranged in such categories as animals, parts of the body, natural objects, etc. Swadesh's "Makah field notes" (item W2c.2) from 1949 consists of 1 field notebook and some loose pages, and include vocabularies, ethnographic notes, and texts. One text on tribal councils, told by George Swan, is a transcript of a recording included in Swadesh's "Nootka and Makah songs and stories" audio collection (Mss.Rec.8), listed separately in this guide.
