Description: See the "Bound Volumes" section of this collection for two diaries: one from July to November 1874, and one from May to October of 1877. The 1874 diary documents the expedition along the various branches of the Gunnison River, describing the landscape, the requirements for negotiating the terrain, and the local tribes, likely the Ute. Includes lists of camp numbers and locations and names of pack animals. Contains various loose items: Notes, pressed leaves, and receipts. The 1877 diary was written primarily in western Wyoming. Begins with a description of Peale's journey from Philadelphia to Cheyenne, Wyoming by train, with stops at Chicago, Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha Nebraska. It then continues with daily entries recording events at each of the 72 camps made by the expedition, which are also indexed at the back of the volume by date and mileage. Includes reference to many Indian encounters. For example, on Tuesday June 7, 1877, one of the expedition members met a Shosoni woman who reported that there had been a fight between the whites and the Sioux. In addition, the expedition members saw many lodges of the Bannock along the Snake and Salt Rivers as well as other Indian camps along the ledges of Crow Creek, such as those above the ranch near Smith Fork where one of the boys spoke very good English as noted on June 29. Describes a number of encounters with Shoshoni, such as one in July when almost all of the Shosoni men asked for tobacco. On August 8, Peale reports that two teamsters were killed at the local agency by Bannocks. On the 23rd, he notes that in Montana Gibbon had had a fight with the Indians and lost 300 new guns, ammunition, artillery and commissary stores in Montana.

Description: A Sachem and Civil War adjutant to Ulysses Grant, Ely Samuel Parker was an important figure in the Seneca Indian nation during the first half of the nineteenth century. Trained as an engineer, Parker was deeply involved in the Senecas' land disputes with the Ogden Land Company and he played an important role in interpreting Seneca culture for a white audience, most notably as a consultant for Lewis Henry Morgan. Collected by Arthur C. Parker, the Ely Samuel Parker Papers include correspondence, manuscripts, and printed materials relating primarily to Seneca affairs, history, language, and culture, as well as politics, education, engineering, and the Civil War. Several letters relate to Parker's service as engineer of public buildings in Galena, Illinois, and to his Masonic activities. Among the noteworthy items in the collection are several essays on Seneca history and culture, a fragment of Parker's diary, 1847, and a significant quantity of material on the Seneca language assembled by Asher Wright. Rich in information on Seneca history, culture, and language and on Parker's varied activities in both the Indian and white worlds, the collection is a major resource for examining the land and political struggles of the Seneca nation during the 1840s and early 1850s. Comprised of a mix of personal and professional correspondence augmented by a smaller quantity of printed materials, notes, and manuscripts, the collection is richest for the period 1845-1860, with only a few letters pertaining to Parker's Civil War service, and even fewer for the post-war period.

Description: The Tuscarora materials in the ACLS collection consist mainly of two items in the "Tuscarora" section of the finding aid. Anthony Wallace's "Notes to accompany Tuscarora recordings" (item 72) accompany the audio collection "Tuscarora Material" (Mss.Rec.2), listed separately in this guide. These notes include some transcriptions and summaries of texts. Topics includes anecdotes, politics, genealogy and kinship terms, disease and magic, autobiographical stories, color perception, history and legend, and a reading of the Jefferson vocabulary. William Reyburn's "Tuscarora texts and word lists" corresponds to the audio collection "Tuscarora Indian Material" (Mss.Rec.9), listed separately in this guide. It includes interviews transcribed from recordings, and texts (including several versions of Crossing the Ice) with translations and vocabularies. In the "Iroquois" section, some information on Tuscarora speakers and language are found in Hickerson's "Material on Iroquois dialects" (item I1.3), a study of Iroquoian languages.
