Description: The Arapaho materials in the Phillips Fund collection consist of 7 items. Materials in this collection are listed alphabetically by last name of author. See materials listed under Andrew Cowell, Orin T. Hatton, William Lewis Merrill, Willam K. Powers, Sue Roark-Calnek, Z. Salzmann, and William Weigel. These materials pertain to both Northern and Southern Arapaho. The materials by Cowell and Weigel relate to linguistic fieldwork for which there are accompnaying audio recordings, listed separately in this guide. Salzmann's material is also linguistic, containing a draft grammar of the language. The material by Hatton also relates to an extensive audio collection, "Ghost Dance-Era Songs of the Arapaho Crow Dance," also listed separately in this guide.

Description: The Assiniboine materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items that can be found in the "Assiniboine" section of the finding aid. Deloria's "Notes on the Assiniboine (Belknap or Watopahnatu dialect)" (item X8d.1) contains a sketch of Assiniboine grammar, compared with that of Dakota, and includes an Assiniboine text, with literal and free translation and notes, and a letter from author to Franz Boas, Jan. 6, 1936, covering the document. The other item is Ahenakew's "The creation of a new tribe" (71), an explanation of creation of Assiniboine tribe, separated from Sioux, given Ahenakew in his youth by his mission superintendent, Rev. John Hines, a battle over a girl accounted for end of connection of Red Eagle with other Sioux, and a letter of Ahenakew to Paul A. W. Wallace, May 21, 1949, commenting on Rev. Hines' relation to the author.

Consists of traditional and historical stories, autobiographical narratives, unidentified texts, all given in Cheyenne only. Also includes discussions of the state of Cheyenne learning among the younger generation, and a variety of peyote, war dance, and hand game songs.
