Newton used primary documents found in Vassar College's Jasper Parrish Papers Collection. Originals of both thesis and the primary documents it is based on are at Vassar College.

Many manuscripts appear to be from the papers of General Israel Chapin, an Indian agent. From originals at the New York Historical Society.
