Description: Several items relating to the Penutian language family have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Of particular interest is Subseries VI. Penutian, including Mayan and Zoque, of Subcollection II, Series II. Research Notes. The contents of this subseries includes folders of materials under the following headings: Chinookan-Chinook, Wishram, Kathlamet; Klamath-Modoc; Maidu; Maya (Tzeltal); Miwok; Penutian; Sahaptin; Takelma; Tsimshian; Yokuts; and Zuni. There are also Penutian materials in Subcollection II, Series IV. Works by Others. These include Leonard Bloomfield's "Penutian" sketch; Giuseppe Francescato's masters thesis, "A Structural Comparison of the Californian Penutian" (1952); and Morris Swadesh's "Problems of Long-Range Comparison in Penutian." Researchers should also view the individual entries for distinct Penutian languages.

Description: The Pomo materials in the ACLS collection consist of materials by Jaime de Angulo are primarily found in the "Pomo" section of the finding aid. This section includes 4 items, including "The reminiscences of a Pomo chief" (item H5.3), which contains an autobiography of William Ralganal Benson, dictated in the Yukaya dialect, along with grammatical notes. Additional items (H5.1, H5.2 and H5.4) include grammatical and other linguistic studies by de Angulo. In the "Achumawi" section, the first two items (H.1 and H.2) contain comparisons of Pomo with Achumawi to determine their relationship and clarify the theoretical Hokan language family.

Description: The Pomo materials in the Franz Boas Papers are of unclear total extent, though a few letters relating to Pomo languages and peoples have been identified. In the correspondence with Jaime de Angulo, see especially the letter sent by de Angulo to Boas on December 5, 1934, which details Pomo kinship terms in "Clear Lake" and "Yukaya" Pomo. Other letters in the de Angulo-Boas correspondence may contains other discussion of Pomo languages. In the correspondence with Alfred Kroeber, mentions of Pomo can be found in letters from Kroeber to Boas on December 17, 1907, and May 4, 1927, as well as letter from Boas to Kroeber on May 3, 1930. The collection may contain additional letters and correspondences of relevance beyond these that have not yet been identified.

Description: A considerable amount of Haas' research from the 1950s onwards involved identifying language family relationships and constructing proto-languages. Comparisons, both lexical and phonological, between Algonquian languages and what Haas labeled ‘Proto-Algonkian, ‘Proto-Central Algonkian and ‘Proto-Central-Eastern Algonkian' (often abbreviated to PA, PCA and PCEA respectively) are abundant especially throughout Series 2 and Series 9. Haas made annotations to others' publications, created bibliographies, and developed family trees and lexica of both Proto-Algonquian and a wide variety of Algonquian languages, including several lexica from multiple historical sources in Series 9. Examples of the above are to be found across much of the collection, often in folders of specific Algonquian languages. See individual cultures and languages for specifics.

Description: The Rarámuri materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items located in the "Tarahumara" section of the finding aid. There is a set of texts with interlinear Spanish translations (item U6a.2), recorded by Wendell Bennett, with a related lexical file (item U6a.1) of 1800+ word slips derived from the texts. Material recorded by Jules Henry consists of 3 field notebooks (item U6a.4) with texts with interlinear translations and biographical information on speakers who provided the stories. Henry's related "Tarahumara materials" (item U6a.3) includes a diverse set of items, including word lists, a draft dictionary, additional texts, a Spanish-Tarahumara newsletter, and a "Cartilla Tarahumara de Lectura" with photomechanical prints depicting housing, utensils, clothing, and social customs.

Description: During the late 1930s, Amelia Susman Schultz conducted fieldwork on acculturation at the Round Valley Indian Reservation, California, for a Ph.D. thesis eventually published in 1976. Series II of the Amelia Susman Schultz Papers reflects both periods of research, though mostly the late 1930s. Of particular interest are: ten field notebooks from 1937, most containing some language data (undetermined as yet which languages) in addition to ethnographic notes from discussions with consultants; ethnographic notes arranged by subject (see items titled "Ethnographic notes by subject" in addition to "Notes on full sheets" and "Notes on half sheets"); descriptions of Round Valley's chronology, population history, genealogy, and socioeconomic surveys; and Schultz's works-in-progress, including the original dissertation.

It contains photocopies of the title pages of two works on Popoluca, a reprint of Voegelin's review of "Sierra Popoluca Speech" by Mary L. Foster and George M.
