Description: Part of a collection comprised of religious and linguistic materials in various Native American languages. Many were written by Jesuit missionaries of New France, although Cuoq was Sulpician. These eight items primarly concern the Algonquin language and include linguistic and religious materials in French, Latin, and Algonquin such as prayers, hymns, canticles, music, catechisms, etc. A few items incorporate some Abenaki, Inuit, and Innu language material as well. There is also the 125-page Registre de Sillery 1637 a 1690 containing Native baptismal and confirmation records. Originals in the archives of the Séminaire de Québec at the Université Laval [formerly the Séminaire de Québec] and the Archives de l'Archeveche de Quebec.

Description: The Cherokee materials in the Lounsbury Papers is found primarily in several sections of the collection. Series I contains correspondence with a number of people on Cherokee language and culture. These correspondents include Harry Basehart, William Cook, William Fenton, John D. Gillespie, Mary Haas, Jack Kilpatrick, John Witthoft. In Series II, see the "Cherokee" section, which contains 3 boxes of research materials, including Lounsbury's field notes with numerous Cherokee speakers in Oklahoma, copies of original notes by other linguists, language instruction materials, and other related documents. The "General Iroquois" section contains some comparative materials as well, as may other sections to smaller degrees. Series VI contains multiple boxes of card files with Cherokee language data in the form of lexicons and texts in translation. In Series VII, there are several audio recordings, including a reading of Private John G. Burnett's eyewitness account of Cherokee removal, 1838-1839, and a significant number of recordings of songs and dances made by Will West Long and Della Owl, and Cherokee lessons by Robert Bushyhead and William Cook.

Description: This collection of materials on American Sign language is based on the work of Presbyterian missionaries in Idaho in the nineteenth century. Includes a Nez Perce hymnal; discussion and illustrations on the meaning of symbols and on the use of sign seven published works; miscellaneous clippings; photographs; and correspondence of sisters Mary and Elizabeth Crawford. The published works include the history of the Idaho mission and sign language translations by Mr. Levi W. Jonas (native Nez Perce superintendent of the Kamiah church) and In-go-nom-pa-shi. Includes over 1,500 sign language hand symbols of the Nez Perce language with thirty portraits of missionaries and Nez Perce Indians of Idaho from 1891-1938. Illustrations from different published works such as Gospel hymns in the Nez Perce language (1897); The Sign language and the invention of Mr. Lewis F.
