Description: The C. F. Voegelin Papers contain grammatical notes, noun and verb paradigms, short texts, and other linguistic and ethnographic materials relating to Meskwaki (Fox) language and culture. These are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II of the Voegelin Papers. Materials in Subcollection I include 1 box of Fox [Meskwaki] stems labeled "research assistant's notes from published sources" in Series II. Card Files. Materials in Subcollection II include Fox [Meskwaki] grammatical notes and noun and verb paradigms in Series II. Research Notes, Subseries III. Macro-Algonquian. There are also Fox [Meskwaki] examples in at least 6 folders ("Č and K," "L and M," "N and P," " Š and T," "Θ and ?" and "Specimens of Central Algonquian") of the many Comparative Algonquian notebooks in the same subseries (i.e., Macro-Algonquian). Some manuscripts written by Gladys Tantaquidgeon, not about Mohegan matters, have been identified among Speck's notes on the Delaware, Wampanoag, and Innu. There may be other manuscripts in the collection written by hand but not yet identified. In Series III (Photographs), there are about 30 Mohegan-related photographs, some possibly taken by Gladys Tantaquidgeon. In Series IV (Lantern slides), there are 9 images, some of which may be duplicate images of those among the general photos. Lastly, Series V (Maps) contains a small number of maps of Mohegan lands.

Description: Materials relating to James M. Crawford's interest in and study of the Ojibwe (sometimes Ojibwa) language. These materials are located in an undated folder in Series IV-D. Research Notes & Notebooks--Other, and consist of about 50 sheets of handwritten notes and outlines. Topics include sounds, morphology, and categories of inflection, but the majority of sheets comprise one set (numbered 1-44) that break a story down in Ojibwe on the left with English translation on the right. The story involves a young man who, fasting for a vision, dreamt of a mirror. Later in life, the mirror came to his aid by rendering him invisible when an enemy war party attacked him, allowing him to defeat the enemy warriors nearly single-handedly.

Description: Throughout the 1990s, Jane Rosenthal conducted research at the Archivo General de Mexico and Newberry Library of Chicago on the life and work of Natal Lombardo. This included researching and attempting to produce a facsimile of his “Arte de la Lengua Teguima”, and identifying one document, previously attributed to him, to actually be of Eudeve by Balthasar Xavier Loaysa. Two publications resulted from this. Materials surrounding this include research notes and xeroxes of source materials (Series 2 Subseries 3; Series 5), correspondence (Series 1; Series 5), and digital materials (Series 9). See the description of Series 2 Subseries 3 for more details.

Description: The Penobscot materials in the Frank Siebert Papers are concentrated in Series III. Siebert collected census material, treaties and treaty minutes, placenames, with a strong representation of songs, stories, and linguistic materials. There are detailed notes about Indian claims in Maine and genealogical information. There are also educational materials for the teaching of the Penobscot language as well as a wealth of information on Penobscot linguistics. Series V, Siebert's notebooks, have extensive grammatical, phonetic, and vocabulary of the Penobscot language. Both Series III and V reflect Siebert's deep interest in the history of Maine and the Eastern Abenaki including archaeological, pre-history, and colonial era documents such as the Eliot Bible, which Siebert owned a rare copy in his library, which was sold at auction. Series VI and VII contain various drafts of essays on Penobscot culture, language, and history. Series XI contains 5 related photos of Louis Lolar, taken in 1933. Series XII contains approximately 3 hours of Penobscot language recordings, primarily from the 1930s and 1950s.
