Description: Materials by both Harry Hoijer and Father Berard Haile, O.F.M., relating to the academic study of Jicarilla Apache. These include several Jicarilla texts--including many Coyote stories--in phonemic transcription, with interlinear English glosses and many explanatory notes of ethnographic interest; Haile's rewriting of Pliny Earle Goddard's "Jicarilla Texts"; and what seems to be a typed draft of a monograph. Cevero Caramillo and Alasco Tiznada are mentioned as Apache collaborators, particularly with the Coyote stories. Titles of texts/stories are listed in the guide to the Harry Hoijer Collection.

Description: The Kalispel materials in the Lounsbury Papers consists primarily of Allan Smith's 1936-1938 typewritten field notes from the Kalispel Reservation, found in Series II, which comprises 11 folders totaling roughly 2000 pages, covering a broad range of Kalispel ethnographic information. In Series I, see correspondence folders of Edward Sapir and Leslie Spier, which include reports sent to them of Kalispel fieldwork, and two photographs of Kalispel men identified as Blind Paul and Michel Ignace.

Description: The Kathlamet materials in the ACLS collection consist of items in two sections of the finding aid. In the "Chinook" section, Boas' notebooks 1, 2, and 4 of Field notes on Chinookan and Salishan languages and Gitamat, Molala, and Masset" (item Pn4b.5) contain texts, ethnographic information, and grammatical notes. In the same section, Boas' "Miscellaneous notes on Chinookan languages" (item Pn4.1) includes a text in an unidentified language and fragmentary slips of Chinook-Kathlamet comparisons. In the "Kathlamet" section, there is an additional field notebook by Boas (item Pn4a.8), and two large, separate lexicons derived in part from his fieldwork (items Pn4a.2 and Pn4a.3).

Description: The Kwakwaka'wakw materials in the ACLS collection are located predominantly in the "Kwakiutl" section of the finding aid, which contains a full listing of all materials (other relevant sections are "Northwest Coast", "Bella Bella (Heitsuk)", and item AfBnd.4 in "Non-American and non-linguistic material"). Some of the larger individual sets of materials listed within this section also have their own specific tables of contents (available upon request) detailing their often highly diverse contents. Overall, the vast majority of the material is made of of 1) manuscripts sent to Boas by George Hunt from the 1890s to the 1930s, frequently in both Kwak'wala and English, covering a very broad range of Kwakwaka'wakw history, culture, languages, customs, and traditions; and 2) field work materials recorded by Boas and Boas' own analyses of material sent by Hunt, covering a similar range of topics. Additional materials by other individuals focus especially on linguistic and ethnographic matters. Description: The Laguna materials in the ACLS collection of several items, primarily located in the "Laguna" section of the finding aid. There is a large set of 24 field notebooks recorded by Franz Boas ("Laguna word lists, paradigms, and texts", item Ke2.5) containing texts, and linguistic and ethnographic notes, some written German shorthand. Additional materials in this section of the finding aid derive from this field work, including extensive lexicons, additional linguistic analysis, texts, and discussion of kinship terms. These include three short Lipan texts (undated) in phonemic transcription, with English translations on separate pages for which Lisandro Mendez is credited as an informant; a notebook (circa 1936-1939) titled "Lipan Apache FIeld notes" containing texts ("At School" and "Further Schooling," one of which concerns the St. Boniface Industrial School in Banning, California) in Lipan Apache in phonemic transcription, with interlinear English glosses, and notes to the texts on facing pages; and a typed draft and offprint of Hoijer's resulting article, "The History and Customs of the Lipan, as told by Augustina Zuazua," published in the journal Linguistics 161 (1975): 5-38.

Description: The Makah materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items in the "Makah" section of the finding aid. Boas' "Makah lexicon" (item W2c.1) consists of 738 cards arranged in such categories as animals, parts of the body, natural objects, etc. Swadesh's "Makah field notes" (item W2c.2) from 1949 consists of 1 field notebook and some loose pages, and include vocabularies, ethnographic notes, and texts. One text on tribal councils, told by George Swan, is a transcript of a recording included in Swadesh's "Nootka and Makah songs and stories" audio collection (Mss.Rec.8), listed separately in this guide.
