Description: There are a few items in the Frank G. Speck Papers currently identified as relating to Indian boarding schools.In the collection guide, under Subcollection 1, Series 1, in Section IV, "Southeast," see item IV(15H3), "Yuchi miscellaneous notes," which contains a letter from Ann Rolland (Haskell Institute), to Speck, April 6, 1941, as well as items under "C. Houma (Louisiana)" that relate to mission schools. In Section XIII, "Miscellaneous," see item XIII(22H), "Haskell Institute Roster," which lists of Native students and the Haskell Institute boarding school in 1939-1940, giving name, age, address, and tribe. (The tribes of the students included are listed above in this entry.) In Subcollection I, Series II, Biographical Material, see letters (listed alphabetically by author) from Leona E. Giger and Ann Rolland, both students at Haskell in the early 1940s. Also see letter from "Redge" and Gladys Laulin regarding Chippewa boy returning home for dances. In Series III, Photographs, there is an undated photograph [#10-14(a)] from the Shingwauk Indian Residential School. Description: The Cochiti materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items in multiple sections of the finding aid. In the "Cochiti" section of the finding aid, there is a set of 5 field notebooks (item Ke1.7) recorded by Boas in 1921-1922 containing his original field notes, texts, vocabularies, paradigms, and notes in German shorthand. A second set of loose-leaf notes (item Ke1.6) consists of texts with interlinear translations derived from the notebooks, 20 of which were later rendered into free translations by Ruth Benedict and published in 1931. In the "Keresan" section, Boas' "Keresan word list and linguistic notes" (item Ke1.1) contains 8 folders of Laguna and Cochiti grammatical, linguistic, folkloristic, and ethnographic materials. His "Keresan lexical file" (item Ke1.2) contains 8,000 Keresan terms, with some references to manuscripts from which they were derived, many of which are likely Cochiti. (This file may contain Western Keres as well.) In the "Laguna" section of the finding aid, Boas' "Laguna Vocabularies and texts" (item Ke2.4) includes Keresan, Laguna, and Cochiti Vocabularies, grammatical notes, and texts. Lastly, in the "Tewa" section, "Cochiti and San Juan Pueblo songs" (item Ke1.10) contains words, music, paraphrase of text, lists of ceremonial terms, and a "Phonologic chart for Cochiti Keresan and Tewa-Tanoan." NOTE: Portions of this material may be restricted due to potential cultural sensitivity.

Description: The Keresan materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items compiled by Franz Boas, located in the "Keresan" section of the finding aid. The "Keresan word list and linguistic notes" (item Ke1.1) includes Cochiti and Laguna grammatical, linguistic, folkloristic, and ethnographic materials. There is also "Keresan lexical file" (item Ke1.2) likely derived primarily from Cochiti and Laguna fieldwork, though the extent of other languages' information is undetermined. Other materials from this collection that primarily relate to Laguna or Cochiti are listed separately in this guide.

Description: Three items relating to Keresan languages and associated pueblos have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. They are all located in Subcollection II. They include correspondence with Joel M. Maring regarding Eastern and Western Keresan and Hopi in Series. I. Correspondence; and two stories from Cochiti ("Salt Woman Gets No Food at Cochiti" and "Arrow Boy and Eagle Girls") and one from Santo Domingo ("Turkey Girl") in the Southwestern Indian Tales category of Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries II: American Indian Tales for Children. The Keresan-speaking pueblos are also represented on Harry Tschopik's map of "Indian Languages in New Mexico, A.D. 1600" (1938) in Subseries V: American Indian Languages. This final item has been digitized and is available through the APS's Digital Library. Other portions of this material may be restricted due to potential cultural sensitivity.

Description: The Laguna materials in the ACLS collection of several items, primarily located in the "Laguna" section of the finding aid. There is a large set of 24 field notebooks recorded by Franz Boas ("Laguna word lists, paradigms, and texts", item Ke2.5) containing texts, and linguistic and ethnographic notes, some written German shorthand. Additional materials in this section of the finding aid derive from this field work, including extensive lexicons, additional linguistic analysis, texts, and discussion of kinship terms. In the "Keresan" section of the finding aid, see also Boas' additional vocabularies and comparative Keresan lexical files, in which Laguna material is compared with Cochiti.

Description: The Laguna materials in the Elsie Clews Parsons papers consist of a draft manuscript of a "Laguna emergence myth," found in Subcollection I, Series II, "Notes, manuscripts, etc." under item 61, which contains draft versions from her "Pueblo Indian Religion" book. In Subcollection II, Series III, "Lectures and Manuscripts", see the "In the Southwest" manuscript, which contains "Folder #9. "Laguna Lodging Houses," In Subcollection II, Series IV, "Research Notes," there are numerous field notebooks labelled "Laguna," as well as some Laguna information in "Zuni - Notes by Alfred L. Kroeber" and "Zuni and Laguna Songs - Notes." Some of this material may be restricted due to cultural sensitivity or privacy concerns. Description: J. N. Choate was a local commercial photographer in Carlisle, Pennsylvania who advertised "Photographs of all the Indian Chiefs that have visited the Indian Training School at Carlisle Barracks, also of children in native and school costumes." Choate intended his images to document the benefits of civilization wrought by the Carlisle Indian School (founded 1879, closed 1918) on Native American students. His images include "before and after" shots of students in native dress (before) and school uniforms (after), the school band, students at work in the saddle shop and making shoes, etc. Choate also took a number of photographs of visiting Native leaders in traditional dress, including the Lakota chief Spotted Tail, and the Cheyennes Man on Cloud and Mad Wolf. One photograph depicts Carlisle School founder Richard Henry Pratt seated with Quaker supporters. Among the peoples represented are the Lakota, Laguna, Cheyenne, Creek, Lipan Apache, San Felipe Pueblo, Ute, and Zuni. The photographs in this collection are mounted on standard stock, and include 19 cabinet cards and 8 boudoir cards. Although some of the photographs are titled by hand and signed by Choate, most have printed backmarks with a few including lists of other available images and advertising pitches. These particular specimens were collected by anthropologist Frank Speck. See the finding aid for an itemized list.
