Description: This collection consists almost entirely of photocopies of secondary and primary materials relating to Shawnee history and culture, and the history of the Ohio River region. The majority of the materials are copies of published sources, from the 18th to 20th century, with Stevens' notes on them. The collection is organized according to the topics by which Stevens kept his copies and notes, covering a very broad range of subject matter. The audio recordings are copies of recordings (Shawnee only) housed at the Library of Congress.

Description: The Anthony F. C. Wallace Papers are a vast collection of materials relating to Wallace's work at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and history. Though further research might yield more results, approximately 105 folders and 2 boxes of materials directly pertaining to the Iowa have been identified. These materials include the George Pletsch and Sol Tax files in Series I. Correspondence; copies of secondary materials in Series II. Research Notes and Drafts B. Revitalization and Culture; two boxes of research notecards in Series III. Notecards; and Wallace's own written work in Series IV. Works by Wallace A. Professional. The bulk of Iowa material, however, relates to Wallace's work as an expert witness for Native American land claims and can be found in Series IX. Indian Claims. Often labeled under "Fox Indians" because of inter-related research and land claims, these items include research materials, tribal histories, dockets, trial memoranda, briefs, notes, reports, correspondence, etc., relating to the cases called "Iowa of Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, et. al. vs. the United States of America" and "Iowa Tribe or Nation of Indians, et. al. vs. the United States of America." Among the research materials, there are folders devoted to the Black Hawk War, Bureau of Indian Affairs Records, treaties, ethnographic accounts, the history of the Territory of Iowa, and extracts from or copies of a variety of primary and secondary sources. Iowa materials can be difficult to disentangle from the materials relating to the closely related Meskwaki (Sac and Fox. Researchers are advised to also see the entry for that group and to view the finding aid for a detailed discussion of Wallace's long and varied career and an itemized list of the collection's contents.

Description: One set of documents is related to Pennsylvania's land dispute with Connecticut. A second to tensions between Delaware Indians and white settlers in Wyoming prior to the Revolutionary War. Of particular interest is the debate within the Pennsylvania's Governor's office both planning an attack on Native villages and seeking to end abuse of Delaware, Shawnee, Mohawk, and the Iroquois Confederacy. Wolf clan of Deleware is noted.

These materials include the Nancy Lurie, George Pletsch, Louis Rocmes, and Sol Tax files in Series I. Correspondence; copies of secondary materials in Series II. Research Notes and Drafts B. Revitalization and Culture; two boxes of research notecards in Series III. Notecards; and Wallace's own written work (particularly for his 1990 publication "Prelude to Disaster: The Black Hawk War of 1832," and associated essays) in Series IV. Works by Wallace A. Professional. The bulk of Meskwaki material, however, relates to Wallace's work as an expert witness for Native American land claims and can be found in Series IX. Indian Claims under the labels "Fox Indians" and "Iowa Indians." These dual headings are due to inter-related research and land claims, and there is some overlap in the materials as Wallace used the same sources and notes to prepare for different land claims trials. These items include research materials, tribal histories, dockets, trial memoranda, briefs, notes, reports, testimonies, rebuttals, correspondence, etc., relating to the cases called "Iowa of Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, et. al. vs. the United States of America," "Iowa Tribe or Nation of Indians, et. al. vs. the United States of America," and "Sac and Fox Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, et. al. vs. the United States of America." Description: The Penobscot materials in the Frank Siebert Papers are concentrated in Series III. Siebert collected census material, treaties and treaty minutes, placenames, with a strong representation of songs, stories, and linguistic materials. There are detailed notes about Indian claims in Maine and genealogical information. There are also educational materials for the teaching of the Penobscot language as well as a wealth of information on Penobscot linguistics. Series V, Siebert's notebooks, have extensive grammatical, phonetic, and vocabulary of the Penobscot language. Both Series III and V reflect Siebert's deep interest in the history of Maine and the Eastern Abenaki including archaeological, pre-history, and colonial era documents such as the Eliot Bible, which Siebert owned a rare copy in his library, which was sold at auction. Series VI and VII contain various drafts of essays on Penobscot culture, language, and history. Series XI contains 5 related photos of Louis Lolar, taken in 1933. Series XII contains approximately 3 hours of Penobscot language recordings, primarily from the 1930s and 1950s.

Description: Selected materials on Indian affairs from the Public Archives of Canada, the Public Records Office, London, and Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, relating to the Haudenosaunee. From the Daniel Claus Papers, 1761-1796, are letters and papers on Indian affairs at Forts Pitt, Niagara, and Detroit, with letters of Dr. Alexander McKee, Arthur St. Clair, Joseph Chew, Richard Butler, Joseph Brant, and John Graves Simcoe. From the papers of Brigadier Robert Monckton, 1760-1761, are appointments, returns, reports, bills and receipts, and letters relating to Forts Pitt, Bedford, and Niagara, with letters of James Burd, Horatio Gates, Henry Bouquet, Lewis Ourry, Sir John St. Clair, Thomas Hutchins, John Stanwix, and Lord Amherst. There are also excerpts from the minutes of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs at Albany, 1723-1746; transcripts from the Public Record Office on Indians, trade, defense, 1698-1767, including names of persons naturalized in British America, 1740-61, and accounts of Lt. Col. Harry Gordon, 1756-1761, 1764-1767; Duquesne-Centrecoeur correspondence, 1752-1753, Fonds Verreau, from the Université Laval, Quebec; and, miscellaneous documents. Some of the materials pertain to the Haudenosaunee during the Revolutionary War era. All materials concern eighteenth-century Indian affairs, especially the Haudenosaunee, and to a lesser extent Algonquian Indians. Donated by historian Barbara Graymont in 1965.
