Description: Correspondence from John Wesley Powell and James Constantine Pilling regarding various professional and research matters. Includes a letter from Powell to Frederick W. Putnam, wanting his collections to display in the Smithsonian (1878); a letter from Pilling to Henry W. Longfellow concerning the exact title of the first edition of Hiawatha for a bibliography of Indian linguistics (1879); letters from Pilling to to S. E. Howell concerning Indian studies and headquarters at Smithsonian (1879); a letter from Powell to G. Frederick Wright (1899); and a letter from Powell to Paul Carus concerning his plan for a book on Native American religions (1901). Originals of letters to Putnam, Longfellow, and Howell are in the Records of the Geological Survey, Rocky Mountain Survey, U.S. National Archives. Originals of letters to Wright and Carus are at the Bureau of American Ethnology, John Wesley Powell letters sent, 1897-1902.

Materials include Mathevet's translation into Mohawk of the Old Testament (3 volumes); New Testament (8 volumes); sermons (10 volumes); formal religious materials (16 volumes); an anonymous Algonquin manuscript; and an anonymous volume of catechism, prayers, and hymns in Huron. Description: The Mohican materials in the ACLS Collection consists of 4 sets of material in the "Mahican" section of the collection. These materials were recorded by Morris Swadesh at the Stockbridge-Munsee community in Wisconsin and are predominantly focused on linguistic matters. A set of original field notes ("Mohican field notes", item A1k.4) contains lexical items obtained from Wisconsin Stockbridge community; a folder of miscellaneous historical material; lexical lists, and a narrative biography in English. "Mohican lexical file" (item A1k.2) consists of approximately 6100 slips arranged phonetically, derived from items from liturgical literature as well as books used in the translation of the same (some are Nuu-chah-nulth and have not been separated out). "Mohican lexical materials" (item A1k.1), based on Swadesh's field work, contains a discussion of historical sources, phonetics, morphophonology, historical phonology, as well as vocabulary of letter "W" in Mohican compiled from printed and field sources. "Interlinear translations of Mohican liturgical literature" (item A1k.3) includes catechism, prayers, and copies of printed material on Stockbridge and Hudson River Indians published in 1903 and 1905 by J. Dyneley Prince.
