Description: The Ktunaxa materials in the ACLS collection are extensive and concentrated primarily in the "Kutenai" section of the finding aid, which contains a full listing of all contents. The earliest materials in this section linguistic manuscripts by Jesuit missionaries such as Phillippo Canestrelli (item Ku.15) and John Post (item Ku.11), as well as extensive linguistic and anthropological field notes by Alexander Chamberlain (items Ku.9 and Ku.10), all from the 1890s. Subsequently, James Teit's "Traditions and information regarding the Tonaxa" (item Ku.16) from 1913 includes ethnographic and historical information, recorded in part at Tobacco Plains. The most voluminous amount of material overall is that of Franz Boas, recorded in the 1910s, which includes numerous field notebooks, lexical files, and related notes (items Ku.1, Ku.2, Ku.3, Ku.4, Ku.5, Ku.6, Ku.7, Ku.8, and Ku.17). Finally, see also Paul Garvin's field notes from 1947, containing Lower Kutenai recorded at Bonner's Ferry, Idaho; Cranbrook, B.C.; Creston, B.C.; and Elmo, Montana (item Ku.14 for the notebooks, and Ku.13 for slips).

Description: The Kwakwaka'wakw materials in the Franz Boas Professional Papers consist of numerous folders containing Kwakwaka'wakw stories (some by George Hunt), notes on songs (much of it by the Namgis chief, Dan Cranmer), ethnographic and historical information, and linguistic notes on the Kwak'wala language. See items listed under "Boas, Franz -- Kwakiutl," for some materials, including those by Dan Cranmer. Under "Hunt, George - Kwakiutl," there are notebooks and texts, including 6 texts in Boas's hand in Kwak'wala with English interlinear translation. These includes "Host Speech for great great feast," two texts on "Supernatural Experience" and marriage told by Mrs. George Hunt, and Hë'mănis told by Gi'galas (Gwawa'enuxw), with revised version written by George Hunt. Finally, see the folder labeled "Kwakiutl material (on names)," which contains lists of names of plants, birds, specific people, positions, coppers, and other matters, primarily provided by Dan Cranmer.

Description: Haas' Lakota file consists of two short lexica and several interlinear texts recorded with Chief Crazy Bull of the Hunkpapa Lakota. In addition to being presented in the dedicated subseries in Series 2, it also forms part of a field notebook on various languages from the 1930s in Subseries ‘Multiple Languages'. Wahpeton and Shahiyina Sioux are also represented here, alongside a Siouan family tree. A Dakota Sioux lexicon is also found in the same subseries.

Description: The C. F. Voegelin Papers contain correspondence, card files, notes, notebooks, texts, translations, drafts, articles, maps, and other linguistic and ethnographic materials relating to Delaware (Lenape) language and culture. Many of these items pertain to Voegelin's "Walam Olum or Red Score: The Migration Legend of the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians," published by the Indiana Historical Society in 1954. Such materials are located in primarily in Subcollection I. There is relevant correspondence with Charles Hockett (with questions about Voegelin's article on Delaware and examples from other Algonquian languages), Eli Lilly (regarding various aspects of the Walam Olum, its interpretation and publication), Kenneth E. Pearson (regarding use of Delaware language in Boy Scout ceremonies), John N. Description: The Lenape (or "Delaware") materials in the Siebert collection can be found in Series IV, V, VII. Original notes can be found in Series V: Notebooks, in the folders "Delaware Texts" and "Munsee Field Notes from Nicodemus Peters, Smoothtown, Six Nations' Reserve, Ontario" from 1938. Many of the other materials are from secondary sources. Of interest is geographic diversity of Delaware materials ranging from Willy Longbones in Oklahoma to the Munsee speakers in Ontario. There are also a number of Munsee recordings in Series XII.

Description: The Makah materials in the ACLS collection consist of two items in the "Makah" section of the finding aid. Boas' "Makah lexicon" (item W2c.1) consists of 738 cards arranged in such categories as animals, parts of the body, natural objects, etc. Swadesh's "Makah field notes" (item W2c.2) from 1949 consists of 1 field notebook and some loose pages, and include vocabularies, ethnographic notes, and texts. One text on tribal councils, told by George Swan, is a transcript of a recording included in Swadesh's "Nootka and Makah songs and stories" audio collection (Mss.Rec.8), listed separately in this guide.
