Description: The Mohawk materials in the Lounsbury Papers are primarily found in the "Mohawk" section of Series II: Research Subject. This section contains materials Lounsbury recorded directly with Mohawk speakers from Kahnawake such as Minnie Diabo and Louise Diabo, who Lounsbury appears to have first met via the Mohawk community in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The section also contains notes by Gordon Day, Marius Barbeau, J.N.B. Hewitt, and others. There are also notes for a Mohawk dictionary collected by Gunther Michelson between 1961-1994. The recordings in Series VII include a series entitled "The Mohawks Learn Mohawk," of Lounsbury talking with students in a classroom setting. There are also recordings of Lounsbury teaching at Yale with the Mohawk speaker Minnie Diabo

Description: The Nahua materials in the ACLS collection consist of numerous items in the "Nahuatl" section of the finding aid, which contains a full listing. Prominent materials include texts recorded by Boas from Milpa Alta speakers, including Doña Luz Jiménez, in 1912 (item U7b.4). There are also additional texts, recorded by Miguel Barrios Espinosa in 1950 San Juan Tlilhuacan, Delegacion de Azcapotzales, Mexico City (item U7b.9). Mason (and possibly also Boas') "Nahuatl vocabulary" (item U7b.3) contains 750+ word slips based upon work by Simeón and Mason. "Vocabularies Nawatl" (item U7b.12) by Leon and Swadesh consists of vocabulary of 3 Nahuatl dialects (identified as Telina, Ilamalan, and San Pedro [Atocpan?]) based on field work in 1939 with 4 speakers. There are additional grammatical studies and linguistic treatments by Whorf, Barlow, Croft, and Ripley. Some Nahuatl vocabulary can also be found in comparative Uto-Aztecan materials in the "Uto-Aztecan" section of the finding aid.

Description: The Navajo materials in the ACLS collection include 3 items in the "Navajo" section of the finding. The largest of these is Sapir's "Navajo texts, field notes, and word lists" (item Na31.5), which includes 17 notebooks of texts with interlinear translations and a word slip file derived from these texts that numbers around 11,000 slips. There is also Sapir's "A list of Navaho stems" (item Na31.2) and Morris Swadesh's class notes (Na31.3) based on Edward Sapir's lectures on the Navaho language, containing grammatical notes, texts with translation, 175-word vocabulary, and a brief descriptive essay. In the "Yana" section of the finding aid, see also Swadesh's "Yana and Navaho notes from Edward Sapir" (item H6.1) containing class notes from Sapir's lectures on Yana, Navaho, with comparative Athapascan material. Description: The Nisga'a materials in the ACLS collection consist primarily of materials in the "Nass (Nisga'a)" section of the finding aid. The earliest item (Pn5b.3) is a roughly 500-word Nisga'a-English list compiled by Boas from his own work and that of Schulenberg's "Die Sprache der Zimshian-Indianer." There are subsequent texts and vocabularies recorded by Boas, Sapir, and Stirling within this section. Also included is the first half of a Nisga'a-German dictionary compiled by Boas (item Pn5b.4), and an extensive lexicon by Stirling numbering over 3000 word slips (item Pn5b.1). In the "Tsimshian" section of the finding aid, see also Boas' "Texts and word lists in Tsimshian, Ts'ets'aut, and Nisga'a" (item Pn5a.5), which includes original field notes, texts (most published), song texts, musical scores, and some shorthand notes. Overall, material described in the collection as "Nass" or "Nass River" is Nisga'a, though some may be intermixed among Tsimshian materials.

Description: These materials were compiled by various anthropologists: Edward Sapir, Franz Boas, Alex Thomas, and Frank Williams. Sapir (ca. 1920) collected and annotated a series of Nootka ethnographic and legendary texts (600 pages of materials), initially intended as a third volume of Sapir and Swadesh, Nootka Texts (1939). Boas (ca. 1900-1913) contributed Nootka vocabularies and grammatical notes (100 slips and 100 pages). Thomas obtained Nootka texts for the collection (ca. 1910-1920). Originals at the National Museum of Canada, Ottawa.

Description: The Nuu-chah-nulth materials in the ACLS collection consist of a large body of various materials primarily collected by Franz Boas, Edward Sapir, George Hunt, and Morris Swadesh. The majority of the content pertains to Hupacasath and Tseshaht people in the Alberni Valley area, with the exception of the Hunt materials, which were recorded in the Yuquot area, Mowachaht territory. All of these materials are found in the "Nootka" section of the finding aid, which contains a full, detailed listing. The Boas materials consist of a lexicon of 1500+ word slips dating from the 1890s (item W2a.3). Hunt's "Nootka Tales" (item W2a.5) consist of large body of traditional stories written in English and later typed up by Sapir with additional notes. Sapir's materials comprise the bulk of this section overall. See especially his extremely voluminous "Miscellaneous Nootka material" (item W2a.18), the final item in the "Nootka" section, for which a detailed table of contents is available upon request. This set of materials includes 24 field notebooks with extensive stories (some unpublished or untranslated) and ethnographic notes, as well of 80 folders of typed up notes from the notebooks, arranged into categories. It also includes some photographs, censuses of Nuu-chah-nulth "bands" (1920-1921), and 10 folders notes derived by Sapir (and Swadesh?) from "NW Coast Sources and Archives," pertaining to the region more broadly, including information on Coast Salish culture and history. Finally, Swadesh's materials in this section include some additional ethnographic and linguistic field work, as well as extensive bodies of linguistic analysis of materials recorded by Sapir and himself. Description: The Syilx (Okanagon) materials in the APS collection consists mainly of items in the "Okanagan" section of the finding aid. Boas' "Okanagan materials" (item S1d.1) include vocabulary and texts with interlinear translation, and some corresponding Kalispel forms. Teit's "Vocabulary in Okanagon and related dialects" (item S1d.2) includes forms from Nkaus, Sanpoil, Colville, and Lake dialects, with some parallel forms in Kalispel and Columbia. Rachel Commons' field notes (item S1d.4) include word lists, ethnographic notes (including a map), and some linguistic text. In the "Salish" section of the finding aid, Teit's "Songs from the Salish area" (item S.6) include notes on 80 songs (some of which are Syilx) recorded for and sent to the National Museum of Canada (now the Canadian Museum of History). In this same section, Teit's "Field notes on Thompson and neighboring Salish languages" (item S1b.7) consists of numerous notebooks, which partially include some ethnographic notes on Syilx matters.
