Description: The C. F. Voegelin Papers contain correspondence, card files, notes, notebooks, texts, translations, drafts, articles, maps, and other linguistic and ethnographic materials relating to Delaware (Lenape) language and culture. Many of these items pertain to Voegelin's "Walam Olum or Red Score: The Migration Legend of the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians," published by the Indiana Historical Society in 1954. Such materials are located in primarily in Subcollection I. There is relevant correspondence with Charles Hockett (with questions about Voegelin's article on Delaware and examples from other Algonquian languages), Eli Lilly (regarding various aspects of the Walam Olum, its interpretation and publication), Kenneth E. Pearson (regarding use of Delaware language in Boy Scout ceremonies), John N. Description: The C. F. Voegelin Papers contain vocabulary, grammatical notes, short texts, and other linguistic and ethnographic materials relating to Menominee language and culture. Materials in Subcollection I include corespondence with Leonard Bloomfield (regarding inscription on a silver bracelet obtained from Menominees and Bloomfield's "Menomini Grammar") in Series I. The latter includes some typewritten interlinear texts and notes based mainly on Lucy S. Freeland's work.

Description: This collection includes manuscript and photocopied material of anthropologist and linguist Lucy S. "Nancy" Freeland, in which she records the stories told to her by Thomas Williams and Lena Cox. Also included are offprints from "The Hudson Review" of translations of these myths by linguist Jaime de Angulo (Freeman's husband). There are also documents prepared by linguist Howard Berman in preparation for the publication of these myths in "Freeland's Central Sierra Miwok Myths" (1982). The various materials are stored in four packets labeled A, B, C, and D, and bound together with string. An extremely useful cover letter in Packet A from Berman to Stephen Catlett of the APS explains the materials (what they are, provenance, who made what notations upon them) and their relationship to Freeland materials already in the APS collections; APS staff have also made relevant notes in pencil to denote where the various materials can be found. Images are primarily of Coyote, the black and white illustrations accompany the text of “Seven Indian Tales” by Jaime de Angulo. Originally printed in the Hudson Review, an offprint of the published work Indian Tales (1952).

Some manuscripts written by Gladys Tantaquidgeon, not about Mohegan matters, have been identified among Speck's notes on the Delaware, Wampanoag, and Innu. There may be other manuscripts in the collection written by hand but not yet identified. In Series III (Photographs), there are about 30 Mohegan-related photographs, some possibly taken by Gladys Tantaquidgeon. In Series IV (Lantern slides), there are 9 images, some of which may be duplicate images of those among the general photos. Lastly, Series V (Maps) contains a small number of maps of Mohegan lands.

Description: These materials were compiled by various anthropologists: Edward Sapir, Franz Boas, Alex Thomas, and Frank Williams. Sapir (ca. 1920) collected and annotated a series of Nootka ethnographic and legendary texts (600 pages of materials), initially intended as a third volume of Sapir and Swadesh, Nootka Texts (1939). Boas (ca. 1900-1913) contributed Nootka vocabularies and grammatical notes (100 slips and 100 pages). Thomas obtained Nootka texts for the collection (ca. 1910-1920). Originals at the National Museum of Canada, Ottawa.
