Description: Correspondence from John Wesley Powell and James Constantine Pilling regarding various professional and research matters. Includes a letter from Powell to Frederick W. Putnam, wanting his collections to display in the Smithsonian (1878); a letter from Pilling to Henry W. Longfellow concerning the exact title of the first edition of Hiawatha for a bibliography of Indian linguistics (1879); letters from Pilling to to S. E. Howell concerning Indian studies and headquarters at Smithsonian (1879); a letter from Powell to G. Frederick Wright (1899); and a letter from Powell to Paul Carus concerning his plan for a book on Native American religions (1901). Originals of letters to Putnam, Longfellow, and Howell are in the Records of the Geological Survey, Rocky Mountain Survey, U.S. National Archives. Description: This collection of materials on American Sign language is based on the work of Presbyterian missionaries in Idaho in the nineteenth century. Includes a Nez Perce hymnal; discussion and illustrations on the meaning of symbols and on the use of sign seven published works; miscellaneous clippings; photographs; and correspondence of sisters Mary and Elizabeth Crawford. The published works include the history of the Idaho mission and sign language translations by Mr. Levi W. Jonas (native Nez Perce superintendent of the Kamiah church) and In-go-nom-pa-shi. Includes over 1,500 sign language hand symbols of the Nez Perce language with thirty portraits of missionaries and Nez Perce Indians of Idaho from 1891-1938. Illustrations from different published works such as Gospel hymns in the Nez Perce language (1897); The Sign language and the invention of Mr. Lewis F. Hadley (Chicago, 1891); and Sign language; talk by In-go-nom-pa-shi. Also, clippings from various Presbyterian publications. From materials in possession of Miss Jean Rumsey.

Description: These materials were compiled by various anthropologists: Edward Sapir, Franz Boas, Alex Thomas, and Frank Williams. Sapir (ca. 1920) collected and annotated a series of Nootka ethnographic and legendary texts (600 pages of materials), initially intended as a third volume of Sapir and Swadesh, Nootka Texts (1939). Boas (ca. 1900-1913) contributed Nootka vocabularies and grammatical notes (100 slips and 100 pages). Thomas obtained Nootka texts for the collection (ca. 1910-1920). Originals at the National Museum of Canada, Ottawa.

The latter also includes members' date of joining and describes their duties; prayers and rules of conduct for the group are written in Onondaga.
