Description: The Achumawi materials in the ACLS collection are primarily located in the "Achumawi" section of the finding aid, with some also in the "Atsugewi" section (specifically item H1a.2, "Parallel Achumawi and Atsugewi texts"). They include a word list from the Pit River area; autobiographies of Willard Carmony, an Achumawi speaker, whose stories refers to being sent to Fort Bidwell Indian Boarding School; linguistic analysis of Achumawi's relationship to the Hokan language family; conversational texts in the Achumawi language; free English translations; and grammars. Also included are notes on dialectical differences between Atwamdzini, Hammawi, and Adzumawi.

Description: William Bright's most significant Cahuilla materials consist of audio recordings of Cahuilla songs and wordlists made between the 1950s and 1980s. Katherine Siva Saubel is identified as a speaker on some, while others contain singing from an unidentified male. These can be found in Series 6 and the Digital Library. In addition are Bright's own interlinear glosses of Cahuilla songs and notes on J. P. Harrington's Cahuilla materials (Series 4), a lexical slip file comparing several Takic languages (Series 5), correspondence (Series 1) and copies of several small publications on Cahuilla language and culture, including a lexicon by Saubel (Series 2).

Description: Several items relating to the indigenous peoples and languages of the region now known as California have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. This entry is intended as a catch-all for items Voegelin himself grouped under the general heading of "California." Researchers should also view the entries for specific culture groups and languages. The various subseries devoted to Hokan, Penutian, and Uto-Aztecan languages in Subcollection II, Series II. Research Notes might also be of interest. The following "California" items are all located in Subcollection II. They include a comparative vocabulary of California tribes (with words from from Hupa, Wiyot, Karuk, Shasta, Achumawi, Atsugewi, Konkow [Northwest Maidu], Yana, Wintu, Maidu, and Modoc) in Subcollection II, Series II. Research Notes, Subseries V. Hokan. There are two items in Series II. Research Notes, Subseries IX. Uto-Aztecan, except Hopi: a folder on "Baja California" containing notes excerpting "Tribes and Languages of Baja California" by William C. Massey, vol 5, pp. 272-307 (1949), and a folder containing comparative charts of . There are two stories--"Coyote and the Women Hunters" (Tübatulabal) and "Measuring Worm Rescues Two Boys" (Yokuts)--in the California Indian Tales category in Series III. Description: The heart of the Fanggui Li Collection is comprised of ten notebooks kept by the linguist Fanggui (Fang-Kuei) Li relating to his research on the Denesuline "Chipewyan" language in 1928. Recorded in the field, these texts consist of phonetic transcriptions of stories elicited from François Mandeville in Denesuline, and, in one instance, Baptiste Ferrier) in July 1928, with interlinear English translations. The topics of these stories include myths, folklore, and tribal history as well as activities like fishing, tanning a moose hide, or making a canoe. The balance of the collection consists of an extensive slipfile for Denesuline language, and two audio cassettes of oral history interviews conducted by Laurence C. Thompson and M. Terry Thompson in 1982, concerning Li's memories of Edward Sapir and other colleagues in linguistics. Interview topics include Li's early education, experience at the University of Chicago, Leonard Bloomfield, Edward Sapir's influence on his course of study, Li's fieldwork on the Mattole language in Northern California in the late 1920s, discrimination against Chinese in that region at that time, Li's work with Sapir on the Hupa reservation, and various aspects of linguistic methodology of the times, including recording with wax cylinders. Description: From the age of 21 throughout his life, William Bright worked with Karuk speakers to document and revitalize their language, resulting in becoming the first white honorary member of the Karuk tribe. The most prominent materials at the American Philosophical Society as a result are wide-ranging audio recordings, from the 1950s until the 2000s (Series 6), especially with Violet Super. With Susan Gehr, he produced a Karuk language dictionary, correspondence with whom (Series 1) contains draft texts. With the Karuk he contributed considerably to the literature on Coyote in particular, original transcriptions of which are in notebooks in Series 3 Subseries 1, and further developments in Series 2. He also collected many small publications about Karuk, in the same series. Additionally of interest in Series 1 is correspondence about the suspected arson of a'tim'îin, the Karuk sacred site near Somes Bar, CA. Karuk materials can be found in every series.

Description: The Nongatl materials in the ACLS collection consist mainly of 23 notebooks (item Na20h.1) in the "Nongatl" section of the finding aid. These were recorded by Goddard at Van Dusen Fork and Mad River from consultants Pete and Mrs. Pete, and include Vocabularies, texts with partial translations, narrative of family migration, Mad River place names, and material on Big Bend and Mad River settlements. In the "Hupa" section of the finding aid, Goddard's "Field notes in California Athabascan languages" (item Na.2) also include some Nongatl texts and ethnographic information.

Description: The Patwin materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers include notebooks, notes, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and tracings by A.M. Halpern, Paul Radin, A.L. Kroeber, T.T. Waterman, Donald Ultan, and Howard Wilson, along with pencil sketches by Patwin people in Subcollection I, Series I, Series I-A. There are two dictionaries, by Paul Radin and Donald Ultan in Subcollection I, Series I, Series I-B. Series I-C contains linguistic materials collected by Jaime de Angulo, Kroeber, and Waterman. Series I-D contains Pitkin's work with using a krmograph to create phonetic tracings. Subcollection I, Series II-A includes linguistic work done by Elizabeth Bright, Waterman. Subseries 4-C in Subcollection II includes fieldwork done by Pitkin comparing Patin to Wintu and Nomlaki as well as FIeld notes by Morris Swadesh, nineteen unpublished Vocabularies collected by Pitkin, Jaime de Angulo, Mary Haas, Sally McLendon, Mary Bright, Donald Ultan, and Radin. Subseries 5 contains an index to Radin's work on Patwin as well as Pitkin's work on Proto-Wintu and William Bright's worker wtih the speaker Minnie Bill.

Description: The Suisun materials in the Harvey Pitkin papers consist of numerous word lists that Pitkin compiled from various historical and linguistic sources. In Subcollection I, Series I-B, see John Alden Mason's "Suisun vocabulary" from 1916. In Subcollection II, Subseries 4-B, there are copies of vocabularies and versions of the Lord's Prayer in Suisun. In Subcollection II, Subseries 4-C, see "Section 6: Suisun" for Pitkin's typed-up versions of all Suisun vocabularies he compiled. In Subcollection II, Series 6, see 4 sections of card slips derived from Suisun vocabularies.

Description: The Wintu materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers are extensive. Subcollection I, Series I, contains notes, notebooks, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and phonetic tracings by Jeremiah Curtin in the late 19th century, Roland Dixon, and A.M. Halpern. Series I-B contains Pitkin's grammar slip files and vocabularies collected by Curtin. Series I-C includes Jaime de Angulo's manuscript on the Patwin language, S.A. Barrett's transcriptions and translations of speech and song recordings, Radin's "Grammatical Sketch" and Waterman's notes on Patwin phonetics. Series II-A is rich in materials collected by A.L. Krober. In Subcollection II, Pitkin's field notes are located in Series 2, Subseries 1. Subseries 2 includes Pitkin's extensive notes on his Wintu dictionary, grammar, texts, stories, and music. The manuscript of the dictionary is located in Subseries 3. There is an unpublished 416 page manuscript of stories written in both English and Wintu, songs, and transcriptions in Subseries 4. This section also includes copies of all the extant linguistic material with works by noted linguists such as Curtin, Albert Gatschet, Radin, Halpern, Morris Swadesh, Victor Golla, and J.P. Harrington. Series 6 is comprised of card file slips with comparative analyses by Pitkin of the four languages of the Wintun family.
