Description: Haas' Atakapa file consists mostly of morpheme analysis and lexical comparisons to languages of the Gulf area under the Gulf macrofamily hypothesis, the majority of which can be found in Series 9 under the headings of language families and proto-languages. Of particular interest is a comparative phonology of Southern US and Mexican languages, likely written by Morris Swadesh, in Series 3.

Description: Haas' Chimariko file is formed of derivations of Edward Sapir's fieldwork in 1927 that primarily recorded Hupa. Sapir's consultant was Martha Ziegler. A short lexicon is in the field notebooks of Series 2 Subseries ‘Yurok', while the majority is lexica, phonetics, morphological and ethnographic notes by Sapir himself in Series 9. Morris Swadesh also reinterpreted Sapir and others' phonetic Chimariko into a phonemic orthography, also in Series 9, and sent some materials to Haas as correspondence in Series 1. Additionally, Chimariko is scattered throughout comparative work.

Description: Mary Haas did not conduct her own fieldwork on Chitimacha, but amassed sizeable lexica from Morris Swadesh, mostly used for comparisons with Muskogean languages and linguistic isolates under the “Gulf” hypothesis. One especially large instance of comparison involving Chitimacha is an 1821-word long English-Natchez-Chitimacha word list, partially filled, in Series 2 Subseries Natchez. The majority of the comparative lexica are slip files, in Series 9. Besides this, of particular interest is sheet music of several Chitimacha songs, untitled, likely from Delphine Ducloux, in Series 2 Subseries Chitimacha. Haas also published an article on clans and kinship terminology with Natchez comparisons, notes and discussions of which are in Series 4 Subseries 3.

Extent:14 notebooks and approximately 6700 slips
Description: The Ditidaht materials in the ACLS collection are found in the "Nitinat" section of the finding aid. The bulk of the material consists of field notebooks (item W2b.2, "Nitinat field notebooks") recorded by Mary Haas and Morris Swadesh primarily from Chief Peter (Batlisqawa) and his son Jasper of Port Renfrew in 1931. The notebooks include numerous texts of traditional stories, histories, autobiographical stories, and other content including place names, vocabularies, and grammatical notes. A full table of contents of these notebooks is available. An extensive lexical file of over 6700 terms, derived from these field notebooks, is also found in this collection as item W2b.1, "Nitinat lexical file". See the Ditidaht materials in the Mary Rosamond Haas Papers (Mss.Ms.Coll.94) for additional notebooks and photographs recorded during this fieldwork.

Description: The most noteworthy aspect of Mary Haas' Ditidaht file, stemming from fieldwork conducted with Morris Swadesh as her first fieldtrip, is a fairly detailed transcription of songs collected. Series 2 contains the transcriptions and Series 10 the cassette copies, while the original tapes are housed at the Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music. There is much overlap with Nuu-chah-nulth, as Haas frequently identified correspondences between them. A sizeable lexical file (Series 9) and correspondence with many, especially Edward Sapir and George Herzog (Series 1) may also be of interest.

The correspondence, in Series I, includes notes by Marius Barbeau on six Iroquoian language varieties, a recording of the Condolence Ceremony recited by George Thomas, Gordon Day's work on Iroquois place names in Vermont, William Fenton's work on Iroquois-Cherokee linguistic relations, a manuscript of Mary Haas' comments on FGL's "Iroquois-Cherokee Linguistic Relations," George Harnell's work on Iroquois culture, Gunther Michelson's work on Iroquois place names, James Pendergast's study of longhouse construction and LaSalle's 1669-1670, Morris Swadesh's notes on the Caughnawaga Iroquois in Brooklyn, NY, Elisabeth Tooker on Iroquois cosmology, a manuscript of Iroquois grammar by Carl Voeglin, William Wykoff's study of Iroquois prehistory.

Description: Mary Haas' Makah file appears to be mostly derived from work by William Jacobsen, who frequently assisted Haas with developing her collection throughout her life. These include correspondence (Series 1 and 2) and parts of lexica, often compared with Ditidaht and Nuu-chah-nulth especially. The largest lexicon is in Series 9, from work by Leo Frachtenberg and Morris Swadesh, at around 1000 slips.
