Description: Items relating to Hoijer's field work on the Chiricahua and Mescalero Apache dialects and as he prepared the resulting work for publication. These include several notebooks, five containing Chiricahua texts with interlinear English glosses and English translations and one containing Mescalero texts in phonemic transcription, with interlinear English glosses, and English translation and additional notes on facing page. There are also 23 pages of typescript taken from these notebooks, containing English translations only [not proofread] and several tales, which are listed in the guide to the Harry Hoijer Collection. Sam Kenoi is mentioned as the primary informant and translator. A Lipan-speaker, Crook-Neck, is also mentioned. There are also two items related to the San Carlos (Western Apache) dialect: David Mandelbaum's work with informant Lewis Russell in 1933 and 325 pages (undated) of phonetic texts (no English translations) with a note inside that reads "San Carlos or Chiricahua?"

Description: Count Paolo Andreani was an aeronaut, physicist, naturalist, and traveler. This is a translation of his travel diaries from originals owned by Count Antonio Sormani Verri, of Milan. Includes Frammenti de Diario, a fragment of a diary kept on a trip to Britain, circa 1783-1784; Viaggio da Milano a Parigi, journal of a voyage from Milan to Paris, 1784; Viaggi di un gentiluomo milanese, Giornale, typed transcriptions of the travels of a gentleman from Milan, containing notes on the Iroquois [Haudenosaunee] Indians, 1790; Giornale de Filadelfia a Quebec, journal from Philadelphia to Quebec, 1791; and, journal of a trip through New York state (including visits to Albany, the reservations of the Haudenosaunee, Saratoga, and the Shaker community at New Lebanon), 1790. Of particular importance are his comments on the Haudenosaunee, from Albany to the Haudenosaunee, pages 32-85, especially pages 45-85, which is copied in a typed transcript by Count Antonio Sormani Verri, 15 pages. Discusses the Oneida: dress, physical type, government, religion; discusses Tuscarora and Onondaga; comments on language of Mohawks. Vocabularies, sentences of Onondaga, Oneida, and Seneca.

Description: Two items relating to the Cuicatec (Cuicateco) language of Oaxaca, Mexico have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Both are in Subcollection I. There is a copy of Joan Elisabeth Goetz's "A Morphological Analysis of Cuicateco Words" (1954) in Series IV. Works by Others; and there is an undated "Cuicateco" folder in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes. The latter folder contains what appears to be a typed draft of introductory material for Goetz's "Translation from FL Cuicateco to T1 English," based on an animal story narrated by indigenous speaker Teofilio Mariscal from the village of Concepcion Papalo, and following Voegelin's Multiple Stage Translation method. There are also two typed chapters (whether of Goetz's manuscript or another is unclear) describing an expedition led by Marjorie Davis and Margaret Walker to survey the Cuicateco villages, including a list of villages and language consultants in each, a description of the district and its history (with maps), and linguistic material evidently prepared by Davis and Walker.

Description: Galice word and phrase list from a recording made with Galice speaker Hoxie Simmons at Siletz Reservation in 1956. (Original recording housed at the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages.) Handwritten on looseleaf, listing lexical items in phonemic transcription, with English glosses, e.g., dalbai. Lexicon includes nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, adjectives, as well as inflected forms of nouns ('my wife, your wife, his wife') and phrases (e.g., 'I shall see it', 'what are you doing?'). According to Kendall, nouns and verbs with person markers, but no complete paradigms. In "Series I: Correspondence," also see letter from Dorothy Hoijer to Whitfield Bell for brief info on the recording.
