Description: The Maya materials in the Lounsbury Papers are extensive. The correspondence in Series I includes a Motul (Mayan) dictionary, discussion about translating Maya glyphs and calendrical calculations, the Popol Vuh. Series II consists of articles and manuscripts from a project identified as "Maya kinship unfin. project." Much of this work is focused on interpreting Maya hieroglyphs. In Series VII there are a number of recordings of Yucatec Maya made in the 1960s focused on vocabulary. The correspondence, in Series I, includes a dictionary by Rene Acuna, Lloyd Anderson's Etymologies of Mayan calendrical and astronomical terms, Anthony Aveni's interpretation of Maya hieroglyphs, Brent Berlin's decipherment of Maya hieroglyphs, Gordon Brotherston's comments on FGL's manuscript on Maya dates, Lyle Campbell's bibliography of Mayan linguistics, Wallace Chafe on how FGL got into the study of Maya hieroglyphics, Michael Coe's report that Soviets were successful in using a computer to translate Maya hieroglyphs, R. Description: The Mohawk materials in the Lounsbury Papers are primarily found in the "Mohawk" section of Series II: Research Subject. This section contains materials Lounsbury recorded directly with Mohawk speakers from Kahnawake such as Minnie Diabo and Louise Diabo, who Lounsbury appears to have first met via the Mohawk community in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The section also contains notes by Gordon Day, Marius Barbeau, J.N.B. Hewitt, and others. There are also notes for a Mohawk dictionary collected by Gunther Michelson between 1961-1994. The recordings in Series VII include a series entitled "The Mohawks Learn Mohawk," of Lounsbury talking with students in a classroom setting. There are also recordings of Lounsbury teaching at Yale with the Mohawk speaker Minnie Diabo

Description: Pawnee materials in the Floyd Lounsbury Papers mostly concern semantic analysis of their kinship system as documented by Lewis Henry Morgan in Genoa, Nebraska, which Lounsbury published as an article titled "A Semantic Analysis of the Pawnee Kinship Usage" in the journal Language. An offprint of this with marginalia and notes can be found in Series II, Kinship subseries. In the same subseries see folders "Measures of Kinship Distance", "Miscellaneous Notes" (which contains the kinship terms from Morgan), and "Pawnee" (which includes kinship terms from others). Series III contains "Key to Morgan. On Pawnee" and "Miscellaneous linguistic and semantic notes resulting from early stages of Pawnee paper". Most relevant correspondence (Series I) concerns reprinting the article, but notable other correspondence on Pawnee is with Grace, Haas, Lane, Lesser, and Schneider.
