One notebook (itemA1b.1) recorded by Leonard Bloomfield includes a summary of Menomini inflections prepared by Bloomfield for Morris Swadesh. A separate notebook recorded by Morris Swadesh (item A1b.2) includes field notes, vocabulary, and notes copied from notes of Leonard Bloomfield. There is also an additional set of grammatical notes by Swadesh (item A1b.3), including text "Making Hull Corn" by Jerome Lawe.

Description: There are many items relating to Mexican languages in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. This entry is intended as a catch-all for materials that cover Mexican (and to some extent, Central American) languages in general. Researchers should also view the entries for specific languages (i.e., Nahuatl, Zoque, etc.) and for South America, under which Voegelin often filed Mexican and Central American materials. In Subcollection I, there is relevant correspondence with Glen Turner and William L. Wonderly in Series I. Correspondence; William L. Wonderly's "List of Central American Indian Languages" and Larry Lyman's "The Verb Syntagmemes of Choapan Zapotec" in Series IV. Works by Others"; and a folder on South American and Other Latin American Languages (which includes Central America and Mexico) in file in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes. Description: The Mixtec materials in the ACLS collection consist mainly of three items in the "Mixtec" section of the finding aid. Radin's "Mixtec and Chinantec lexicon" (item MiM.2) is based on his own fieldwork and other published work by Belmar. There is also an analysis of Mixtec tones and those of other neighboring language families by Jaime de Angulo (item MiM.1), and a Spanish-Mixtec vocabulary assembled by McQuown and Swadesh (item MiM.3). In the “Mexico” section of the finding aid, see “Comparative vocabularies of various Indian languages of Mexico” (item AM5), which includes Mixtec vocabulary, and McQuown's “Phonemic systems of various Indian languages of Mexico” (item AM3), which includes Mixtec information. In the “Zapotec” section of the finding aid, see de Angulo's “Estudio gramatical de las lenguas de la familia zapoteca” (item Z.1), which includes Mixtec information and ten ink sketches of maps showing linguistic groups, and de Angulo's “Zapotecan texts” (item Z.3) which includes Mixtec texts. Description: The Mohican materials in the ACLS Collection consists of 4 sets of material in the "Mahican" section of the collection. These materials were recorded by Morris Swadesh at the Stockbridge-Munsee community in Wisconsin and are predominantly focused on linguistic matters. A set of original field notes ("Mohican field notes", item A1k.4) contains lexical items obtained from Wisconsin Stockbridge community; a folder of miscellaneous historical material; lexical lists, and a narrative biography in English. "Mohican lexical file" (item A1k.2) consists of approximately 6100 slips arranged phonetically, derived from items from liturgical literature as well as books used in the translation of the same (some are Nuu-chah-nulth and have not been separated out). "Mohican lexical materials" (item A1k.1), based on Swadesh's field work, contains a discussion of historical sources, phonetics, morphophonology, historical phonology, as well as vocabulary of letter "W" in Mohican compiled from printed and field sources. "Interlinear translations of Mohican liturgical literature" (item A1k.3) includes catechism, prayers, and copies of printed material on Stockbridge and Hudson River Indians published in 1903 and 1905 by J. Dyneley Prince.

Description: The Nahua materials in the ACLS collection consist of numerous items in the "Nahuatl" section of the finding aid, which contains a full listing. Prominent materials include texts recorded by Boas from Milpa Alta speakers, including Doña Luz Jiménez, in 1912 (item U7b.4). There are also additional texts, recorded by Miguel Barrios Espinosa in 1950 San Juan Tlilhuacan, Delegacion de Azcapotzales, Mexico City (item U7b.9). Mason (and possibly also Boas') "Nahuatl vocabulary" (item U7b.3) contains 750+ word slips based upon work by Simeón and Mason. "Vocabularies Nawatl" (item U7b.12) by Leon and Swadesh consists of vocabulary of 3 Nahuatl dialects (identified as Telina, Ilamalan, and San Pedro [Atocpan?]) based on field work in 1939 with 4 speakers. There are additional grammatical studies and linguistic treatments by Whorf, Barlow, Croft, and Ripley. Some Nahuatl vocabulary can also be found in comparative Uto-Aztecan materials in the "Uto-Aztecan" section of the finding aid.

Description: The Navajo materials in the ACLS collection include 3 items in the "Navajo" section of the finding. The largest of these is Sapir's "Navajo texts, field notes, and word lists" (item Na31.5), which includes 17 notebooks of texts with interlinear translations and a word slip file derived from these texts that numbers around 11,000 slips. There is also Sapir's "A list of Navaho stems" (item Na31.2) and Morris Swadesh's class notes (Na31.3) based on Edward Sapir's lectures on the Navaho language, containing grammatical notes, texts with translation, 175-word vocabulary, and a brief descriptive essay. In the "Yana" section of the finding aid, see also Swadesh's "Yana and Navaho notes from Edward Sapir" (item H6.1) containing class notes from Sapir's lectures on Yana, Navaho, with comparative Athapascan material. Description: The Nez Perce materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items, primarily found in the "Nez Perce" section of the finding aid. Noteworthy materials include 1897 field notes by Livingston Farrand (item Ps1a.7), 2 notebooks (item Ps1a.4) by Archie Phinney recorded at Fort Lapwai with his mother Wayilatpu, and grammatical analyses by Swadesh and Velten (items Ps1a.2 and Ps1a.5). There is also an extensive "Sahaptin lexicon" (author unidentified, item Ps1a.6) based largely upon Phinney's published "Nez Perce texts" (1934). In the "Cayuse" section of the finding aid, Swadesh's "Cayuse interlinear texts" (item Ps1a.1) are in the Niimi'ipuutímt language as told by Gilbert Minthorne, including one text later published by Jarold Ramsey as "Fish Hawk's Raid Against the Sioux" (in the book "Coming To Light: Contemporary Translations of the Native Literatures of North America", ed. Brian Swann, 1994, Vintage Books, New York). In the "Quinault" section, a small number Farrand's notebooks (item S2a.1) may contain some Nez Perce texts in English. Identification within the notebooks is unclear.
