Description: The Lenape (or "Delaware") materials in the Siebert collection can be found in Series IV, V, VII. Original notes can be found in Series V: Notebooks, in the folders "Delaware Texts" and "Munsee Field Notes from Nicodemus Peters, Smoothtown, Six Nations' Reserve, Ontario" from 1938. Many of the other materials are from secondary sources. Of interest is geographic diversity of Delaware materials ranging from Willy Longbones in Oklahoma to the Munsee speakers in Ontario. There are also a number of Munsee recordings in Series XII.

Description: This collections consists of texts in several Iroquoian languages (Cayuga, Cherokee, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Tuscarora) recorded and played back to other speakers to test the mutual intelligibility of the languages for various speakers. The recordings comprise numerous texts in these languages, administered mutual intelligibility tests, stories, and conversations, all predominantly untranslated. Originally recorded on wire in the fall of 1950 at various locations in the United States and Canada. Later copied to sound tape reels. The Native speakers involved in these recordings are as follows. The Cayuga language speaker was Jane Owl, recorded at Cattaraugus Indian Reservation (N.Y.) The Cherokee speaker was David Owl, recorded at Cattaraugus Indian Reservation (N.Y.) The Mohawk speakers were Ernest Benedict and Sadie Curlyhead, recorded at Akwesasne (Saint Regis), and Ernest Benedict and Mr. & Mrs. Charles Benedict, recorded at Akwesasne (Cornwall, Ontario). The Oneida speakers were Harry Antone, Betsy Antone, Rosa Antone, Billy Antone, and Mr. & Mrs. Chapman Schanandoah, recorded at the Onondaga Indian Reservation (N.Y.), and Albert Christian, recorded at Nedrow (N.Y.) The Onondaga speakers were Louis Lyons, recorded at the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation (N.Y.), and George Thomas, Jr., Percy Smoke, Thomas Lewis, Pat Homer, and Floyd Henhawk, recorded at the Onondaga Indian Reservation (N.Y.) Description: This small manuscript volume contains a brief vocabulary written down by John Wood "from an old Indian Woman of the name of Edie Turner the 4th of March 1820"; together with newsclipping, Petersburg, Virginia, March 17, identifying informant and relating Nottoway, Powhatan and Welsh. The vocabulary is listed by semantic categories "Of the Universe; Of the Human Species; Of Animals; Vegetable Kingdom; Division of Time; Domestic Essays; Adjectives; Verbs." Marginal comparisons with Tuscarora, Onondaga, Wyandot, Delaware, etc., probably by Peter S. Du Ponceau. Contains numerous autobiographical stories, descriptions of contemporary life on the Onondaga Reservation, and descriptions of tribal customs, foods, history, and governmental. There are 54 texts altogether given in Onondaga only--13 told by Pat Johnson, 41 by Lucenda George. Of these texts, 35 are translated into English by Lucenda George as the earlier recordings are played back to her in short segments. Description: The Onondaga materials in the Lounsbury collection include a French-Onondaga from 1860 in Series II. There are numerous audio recordings including that of a Condolence Ceremony and the Feast of the White Dog (Guy-wee-oo) in Series VII. (These recordings are restricted due to cultural sensitivity.) The correspondence, in Series I, includes Harold Blau's mention of a recording in Onondaga of part of Handsome Lake's code, William Fenton's work with Howard Sky on the Goldenweiser version of the Great Law of Peace in Onondaga, Michael Foster's description of collecting versions of the Thanksgiving Address in Onondaga, Cara Richards on Onondaga recordings.

Description: The Onondaga materials in the Frans Olbrechts Papers consist of numerous items, primarily concentrated in "Series II: Onondaga." Noteworthy materials in this section include several voluminous notebooks (listed as items 2-4 in the series) containing Onondaga word and phrases lists and stories. For the notebooks that make up item 3, "Langauge and Grammar," pages 694-798 contain traditional names, with translations, organized according to clan and gender. Other items in this series include notes on midwinter ceremonies, as well as 3 boxes containing a lexical file of several thousand vocabulary slips derived from the content of the notebooks. In Series I, see Item "4: Handsome Lake materials," which includes several photograpsh of Onondaga people. Item 5, "Schoon Meer," includes one newspaper clipping on Chief Albert Schanandoah of the Onondaga, dated December 8, 1929. Item"6: Comparative relative pronouns," includes Onondaga vocabulary, as does item "10: Iroquoian languages lexical files." Finally, in Series III, see items 11 and 13.

Description: Materials prepared by French Sulpician missionaries in New France in the French and Onondaga languages. Items include an undated French-Onondaga dictionary attributed to Magon de Terlaye, and an unattributed list of members of "Les trois confrairies de la Ste. Famille du Sault de St. Regis," an Indian women's religious society, dated to 1821-1865. The latter also includes members' date of joining and describes their duties; prayers and rules of conduct for the group are written in Onondaga. Originals in Seminaire de Montreal, les Pretres de Saint-Sulpice.
