Description: The Anthony F. C. Wallace Papers are a vast collection of materials relating to Wallace's work at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and history. Though further research might yield more results, approximately 105 folders and 2 boxes of materials directly pertaining to the Iowa have been identified. These materials include the George Pletsch and Sol Tax files in Series I. Correspondence; copies of secondary materials in Series II. Research Notes and Drafts B. Revitalization and Culture; two boxes of research notecards in Series III. Notecards; and Wallace's own written work in Series IV. Works by Wallace A. Professional. The bulk of Iowa material, however, relates to Wallace's work as an expert witness for Native American land claims and can be found in Series IX. Indian Claims. Often labeled under "Fox Indians" because of inter-related research and land claims, these items include research materials, tribal histories, dockets, trial memoranda, briefs, notes, reports, correspondence, etc., relating to the cases called "Iowa of Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, et. al. vs. the United States of America" and "Iowa Tribe or Nation of Indians, et. al. vs. the United States of America." Among the research materials, there are folders devoted to the Black Hawk War, Bureau of Indian Affairs Records, treaties, ethnographic accounts, the history of the Territory of Iowa, and extracts from or copies of a variety of primary and secondary sources. Iowa materials can be difficult to disentangle from the materials relating to the closely related Meskwaki (Sac and Fox. Researchers are advised to also see the entry for that group and to view the finding aid for a detailed discussion of Wallace's long and varied career and an itemized list of the collection's contents.

Description: There are some materials relating to Iroquoian languages in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. This entry is intended as a catch-all for materials labeled as "Iroquois" or "Iroquoian." Researchers should also view the entries for specific Iroquoian languages and culture groups (i.e., Oneida, Seneca, Cherokee). Iroquoian materials are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there is relevant correspondence with Floyd Lounsbury (regarding Oneida, Seneca, and Cherokee work) and Herman B Wells (to William Fenton regarding sending Voegelin to the Iroquois Conference accompanied by slips of notes including potential language consultants including Leroy Cooper, Sherman and Clara Red Eye, Jesse Cornplanter, and Will Bomberry) in Series I. Correspondence; and one folder each of Iroquois (an exam bluebook containing notes on Iroquois history, documentary sources, and some words) and Siouan-Iroquois material (a word list) in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes. In Subcollection II, there are Ojibwe stories about the Iroquois people (Haudenosaunee) titled "Iroquois War near Spanish River," "War with the Iroquois," and "Another Iroquois attack repulsed" in Ojibwe Texts IV, an arrangement of texts by Leonard Bloomfield located in Series II. Description: These 189 original watercolor and ink drawings of pueblo activities were drawn by Joe Bartolo Lente, of Isleta Pueblo of New Mexico. The drawings were commissioned by Elsie Clews Parsons, a sociologist, anthropologist, and folklorist. In 1962, 140 of the paintings were published in "Isleta Paintings" by the Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology. This collection has been designated as culturally sensitive and cannot be reproduced in any fashion. It is currently closed to all access.

Description: Three items relating to Keresan languages and associated pueblos have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. They are all located in Subcollection II. They include correspondence with Joel M. Maring regarding Eastern and Western Keresan and Hopi in Series. I. Correspondence; and two stories from Cochiti ("Salt Woman Gets No Food at Cochiti" and "Arrow Boy and Eagle Girls") and one from Santo Domingo ("Turkey Girl") in the Southwestern Indian Tales category of Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries II: American Indian Tales for Children. The Keresan-speaking pueblos are also represented on Harry Tschopik's map of "Indian Languages in New Mexico, A.D. 1600" (1938) in Subseries V: American Indian Languages. This final item has been digitized and is available through the APS's Digital Library. Other portions of this material may be restricted due to potential cultural sensitivity.

Description: Materials relating to James M. Crawford's interest in and study of the Kiliwa language. Items include card-sized paper slips, Kiliwa-English and English-Kiliwa, with pencilled notes, in Series V. drafts (with edits), handwritten notes, and page proofs of Crawford's review of "Kiliwa Dictionary" by Mauricio J. Mixco [1986] in Series III-D. Works by Crawford--Other; and a 1958 Kiliwa Word List in Series IV-D. Research Notes & Notebooks--Other, which consists of five pages of typed words in English (sometimes also Spanish) with handwritten Kiliwa equivalents. The language consultant was Rufino Uchurte, aged 63, resident of Arroyo Leon, half Paipai and half Kiliwa, and speaker of both languages. Recorder was anthropologist and linguist Judith Joël Hicks. Series I. Correspondence also contains a postcard from Dwight Good with a brief query about an unknown people compared to Kiliwa.

Description: Two items relating to the Kiowa language have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. They are both in Subcollection II. One is a small subseries in Series II. Research Notes, Subseries VII. Kiowa-Tanoan, which contains primarily Towa (Jemez), Tiwa (Taos), and Tewa (Santa Clara and Hopi-Tewa) materials. The other consists of eight Kiowa stories (several featuring Sendeh) in the Plains Indian Tales category in Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries II: American Indian Tales for Children. Researchers might also be interested in viewing the entries for other Tanoan languages.
