Description: Letters discussing grave robbing of Indigenous ancestors' remains and observations of contemporary Native people. Houghton has been among Winnebago, Sacs, Foxes, and Sioux; can get Pottawatomi, Winnebago, and Chippewa skulls, but to get to know personages may take longer; Pitcher is sending sketch to go with a skull. Dr. Wheaton, evidently an army surgeon, spent 1822-1827 at Sault Ste. Marie, then at Mackinaw and Green Bay; consumption infrequent among soldiers, French residents, and Indians, which he attributes to the dry cold climate there; recommends such as treatment for sufferers. Pitcher resigned his Army job for private practice and to assist in forming the medical department of the new University of Michigan. He will send Chippewa skulls to help Morton "build up something like an American Golgotha." Schoolcraft advises Morton to come to Mackinac for treaty payments, where he can see Indians, and suggests a route he can take west to see more Indians. Mentions Chippewa, Menominee, Winnebagos, Stockbridge (Mohegan), Brothertowns, Oneidas, Sioux, Iowa, Sac and Fox Indians.

The other is a brief text (item I1b.1) was recorded by Boas in 1909 and verified by John Alexander Ninham. In the "Iroquois (Haudenosaunee)" section of the finding aid also, see "Material on Iroquois dialects" (item I1.3), which includes biographical and some linguistic information on Oneida, conducted as part of a broader comparative study of Iroquoian languages, for which accompanying audio materials can be found in the "Material on Iroquois Dialects and Languages" collection (Mss.Rec.13).

Description: The Anthony F. C. Wallace Papers are a vast collection of materials relating to Wallace's work at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and history. See the finding aid for a detailed discussion of Wallace's long and varied career, and for an itemized list of the collection's contents. Though further research might yield more results, five items directly relating to the Oneida (in both New York and Wisconsin) have been identified. Of particular interest might be the correspondence of Wallace's students Alex and Catherine H. Ricciardelli, who did ethnographic fieldwork at St. Regis in the 1950s and wrote Wallace informative letters about their experiences at the reservation. Most other materials concern Wallace's work as a researcher and expert witness on behalf of Native American land claims. In Series IX. Indian Claims, there are three folders labeled as follows: "Oneida Indians--Oneida Nation of New York, et.al. vs. the United States of America, Docket 301" (1951), "Oneida Indians--Oneida of Wisconsin: Correspondence," and "Oneida Indians--Oneida of Wisconsin: Finances." In Series XII. Graphics, in a folder labeled "Berdonnet, Pauline Henriette Hyde de Neuville, vicomtesse de, 1814-1900--Indians of North America," there are several images of Haudenosaunee individuals, including one described as "Mary, Squaw of Oneida Tribe." See also the entries for Haudenosaunee, Seneca, and Tuscarora in the Wallace Papers.
