Description: There are many materials relating to Algonquian languages in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. This entry is intended as a catch-all for materials labeled as Algonquian or Macro-Algonquian, or having to do with several Algonquian languages in a general way. Researchers should also view the entries for specific Algonquian languages and culture groups. Algonquian materials are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there is relevant correspondence with Leonard Bloomfield (regarding an inscription on a silver bracelet; Bloomfield's "Menomini Grammar"), Charles Hockett (with questions about Voegelin's article on Delaware and examples from other Algonquian languages), and Morris Swadesh (including a brief Stockbridge vocabulary and a slip of Moravian Delaware) in Series I. Correspondence; 1 box of comparative Algonquian vocabulary and grammar in Series II. and several linguistic maps (i.e., "Algonquian language text with illustrations" and "Linguistic classification of the Southern New England Algonquians"), particularly of the Potawatomi, Delaware, and Shawnee, to accompany the texts of Voegelin's work on Algonquian languages, in Series VII. Photographs. In Subcollection II, there is relevant correspondence from Eric Hamp (to Ives Goddard regarding preparation of Arapaho and Algonquian works) and Frank Speck (to Edward Sapir regarding his work on Mi'kmaq and other northern Algonquian languages and societies) in Series I. This subseries contains a grammatical sketch of Algonquian by Leonard Bloomfield (135 pages of typescript with handwritten edits and 7 interleaved pages of notes by Voegelin); another "Sketch of Algonquian" by Bloomfield consisting of a notebook (approx. 45 pages) and handwritten notes (approx. 80 pages); 5 folders of notebooks focusing on beginning sounds ("Č and K," "L and M," "N and P," " Š and T," and "Θ and ?"), drawing from Pacific Coast Algonquian ("PCA"), Fox [Meskwaki], Plains Cree, Menominee, and Ojibwe; 3 folders of other comparative Algonquian notebooks organized by general nouns, body parts, kinship terms, numerals, and verbs; miscellaneous Algonquian notes; and specimens of Central Algonquian, including short texts in Fox [Meskwaki], Ojibwe, Menominee, and Plains Cree, with English translations. Researchers should also view the entries for specific Iroquoian languages and culture groups (i.e., Oneida, Seneca, Cherokee). Iroquoian materials are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there is relevant correspondence with Floyd Lounsbury (regarding Oneida, Seneca, and Cherokee work) and Herman B Wells (to William Fenton regarding sending Voegelin to the Iroquois Conference accompanied by slips of notes including potential language consultants including Leroy Cooper, Sherman and Clara Red Eye, Jesse Cornplanter, and Will Bomberry) in Series I. Correspondence; and one folder each of Iroquois (an exam bluebook containing notes on Iroquois history, documentary sources, and some words) and Siouan-Iroquois material (a word list) in Series V. Description: The Menominee materials in the ACLS collection consist of 3 items in the "Menonminee" section of the finding aid. One notebook (itemA1b.1) recorded by Leonard Bloomfield includes a summary of Menomini inflections prepared by Bloomfield for Morris Swadesh. A separate notebook recorded by Morris Swadesh (item A1b.2) includes field notes, vocabulary, and notes copied from notes of Leonard Bloomfield. There is also an additional set of grammatical notes by Swadesh (item A1b.3), including text "Making Hull Corn" by Jerome Lawe.

Description: Plains Cree language field notebooks and loose notes from Sweetgrass Reserve and Starblanket Reserve (or Ahtahkakoop), Saskatchewan. The first 10 notebooks (approximately 160 pages each) appear to be in Bloomfield's hand primarily contain texts, with some word lists, in romanized Plains Cree orthography, almost entirely untranslated. A final notebook and loose notes contain 26 texts (numbered 83-108) written in Cree syllabic script by Harry Achenam, with one (#108) written or dictated by Maggie Achenam. The loose notes also contain at least 1 brief text (5 p.) in Cree syllabic script written by "Askiy-kā-pimuhtātahk (Pimutat)" of Starblanket Reserve. These texts were intended as part of a sequel to Bloomfield's Plains Cree TextsPlains Cree Texts (1934), but were never published.

Description: There is a significant amount of Shawnee material in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Materials are in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there are 4 boxes of Shawnee note cards (mostly vocabulary) and 2 folders of document notes (mostly linguistic notes, regarding transitive verbs, stems, phonology, etc.) in Series II. Card Files. Subseries III-A: Works Translated by Voegelin of Series III. Works by Voegelin contains two Shawnee texts that were translated and/or linguistically analyzed by Voegelin and which served as the basis of publications by Voegelin in the early 1950s: "Shawnee Episodes" (5 folders) and "Shawnee Laws" (44 folders of material) [see the finding aid for detailed descriptions of these materials]. Subseries III-B: Works Authored by Voegelin (also of Series III) contains files labeled "Basic Shawnee" and "Shawnee Morphology." There is a folder of linguistic notes (including a story in English) in "[Shawnee?]" and a list of tribal names in "Shawnee" in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A. Language Names. There is a file of "Unique Shawnee Texts" containing Mary Williams' responses to "English Through Pictures" in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-B: Texts. There are 37 Shawnee notebooks in Series VI. Notebooks. The notebooks date to 1934 and primarily contain texts, including many about the life of a consultant identified as F. D., "the way it used to be," and the way life was more recently in 1934 in Oklahoma. Most of the notebooks are accompanied by handwritten notes and typescripts of transcriptions in Shawnee and translations in English. Shawnee is also represented on the language maps created for Voegelin's publications on Algonquian languages in Series VII. Photographs, and there is a reel of Shawnee audio recording (a reading of the transcript of "Shawnee Laws") in Series VIII.
