Description: The Oneida materials in the Lounsbury Papers include photographs in Series I. Series II contains plays and songs from the WPA Oneida Language Project and the Workers Alliance of the Oneida Indian Council. Also of interest are an Oneida dictionary by Mercy Doxtator, et al., a field notebook by Martin Joos, and Lounsbury's work on an Oneida dictionary. There are an abundance of recordings in Series VII including "Dekanawidah" as told by Demus Elm; the "opening" of the Thanksgiving address; sixteen conversations in Oneida; music. Description: Several items relating to the Penutian language family have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Of particular interest is Subseries VI. Penutian, including Mayan and Zoque, of Subcollection II, Series II. Research Notes. The contents of this subseries includes folders of materials under the following headings: Chinookan-Chinook, Wishram, Kathlamet; Klamath-Modoc; Maidu; Maya (Tzeltal); Miwok; Penutian; Sahaptin; Takelma; Tsimshian; Yokuts; and Zuni. There are also Penutian materials in Subcollection II, Series IV. Works by Others. These include Leonard Bloomfield's "Penutian" sketch; Giuseppe Francescato's masters thesis, "A Structural Comparison of the Californian Penutian" (1952); and Morris Swadesh's "Problems of Long-Range Comparison in Penutian." Researchers should also view the individual entries for distinct Penutian languages.

Description: Plains Cree language field notebooks and loose notes from Sweetgrass Reserve and Starblanket Reserve (or Ahtahkakoop), Saskatchewan. The first 10 notebooks (approximately 160 pages each) appear to be in Bloomfield's hand primarily contain texts, with some word lists, in romanized Plains Cree orthography, almost entirely untranslated. A final notebook and loose notes contain 26 texts (numbered 83-108) written in Cree syllabic script by Harry Achenam, with one (#108) written or dictated by Maggie Achenam. The loose notes also contain at least 1 brief text (5 p.) in Cree syllabic script written by "Askiy-kā-pimuhtātahk (Pimutat)" of Starblanket Reserve. These texts were intended as part of a sequel to Bloomfield's Plains Cree TextsPlains Cree Texts (1934), but were never published.

The most extensive correspondences are that of Andrade and Frachtenberg, concerning their linguistic and ethnographic field work. In the finding aid listings for some of these correspondents, the individual letters pertaining to this culture or language will be identified by a subject heading, though for some correspondents this indexing has not yet been completed. Some letters may contain only brief mentions of work being conducted in relation to the topic. Description: There is a significant amount of Shawnee material in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Materials are in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II. In Subcollection I, there are 4 boxes of Shawnee note cards (mostly vocabulary) and 2 folders of document notes (mostly linguistic notes, regarding transitive verbs, stems, phonology, etc.) in Series II. Card Files. Subseries III-A: Works Translated by Voegelin of Series III. Works by Voegelin contains two Shawnee texts that were translated and/or linguistically analyzed by Voegelin and which served as the basis of publications by Voegelin in the early 1950s: "Shawnee Episodes" (5 folders) and "Shawnee Laws" (44 folders of material) [see the finding aid for detailed descriptions of these materials]. Subseries III-B: Works Authored by Voegelin (also of Series III) contains files labeled "Basic Shawnee" and "Shawnee Morphology." There is a folder of linguistic notes (including a story in English) in "[Shawnee?]" and a list of tribal names in "Shawnee" in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A. Language Names. There is a file of "Unique Shawnee Texts" containing Mary Williams' responses to "English Through Pictures" in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-B: Texts. There are 37 Shawnee notebooks in Series VI. Notebooks. The notebooks date to 1934 and primarily contain texts, including many about the life of a consultant identified as F. D., "the way it used to be," and the way life was more recently in 1934 in Oklahoma. Most of the notebooks are accompanied by handwritten notes and typescripts of transcriptions in Shawnee and translations in English. Shawnee is also represented on the language maps created for Voegelin's publications on Algonquian languages in Series VII. Photographs, and there is a reel of Shawnee audio recording (a reading of the transcript of "Shawnee Laws") in Series VIII.
