Description: Barbara Babcock (Department of English) and Nancy Parezo (American Indian Studies and Anthropology) are members of the faculty at the University of Arizona. Their oral history of women anthropologists in the southwestern United States was published in 1988 as Daughters of the Desert : Women Anthropologists and the Native American Southwest, 1880-1980. This related essay includes brief biographical discussions of over 30 women who worked in the southwestern United States between 1880 and 1945. It was published as "The leading edge: Women anthropologists in the native American Southwest, 1880-1945," El Palacio 92 (1986).

Description: Two items by Mexican linguist Francisco Belmar. The first item, "Las lenguas habladas por Los Indigenos and Indian tribes of the state of Oaxaca and their languages," includes a lengthy exposition on Mexican languages, emphasizing relationships with, and discussing Mixe, Zoque, Chontal, and Chochotec (intended for delivery at a session of the International Congress of Americanists, 1895, but never delivered) and a pencil draft of Belmar (1902) [See also Belmar (1902)]. The second item, "Curso de Lengua Mixe," is a brief elementary textbook for teaching Mixe to Spanish speakers, complete with exercises, texts, and lexical comments.

Description: The Wuikinuxv materials in the ACLS collection are incompletely identified as they have been historically intermixed in among materials on neighboring cultures and are not well distinguished by the collectors' documentation. The materials were recorded by Franz Boas and George Hunt, generally in relation to work done at Rivers Inlet. In the "Bella Bella (Heiltsuk)" section of the finding aid, the item "Bella Bella texts, Vocabularies and paradigms" (Item W1b.3), contains at least 30 pages of texts in Oowekyala, with interlinear Kwak'wala and English. In the same section, item W1b.5, "Bella Bella Texts," may also contain some vocabulary or tri-lingual interlinear texts that are Oowekyala. "Heiltsuk and Oowekyala notes" (Item W1a.23) includes two pages of Wuikinuxv notes and German translations, which is undated by may come from Boas's early field work in British Columbia in the late 1880s. In the "Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw)" section of the finding aid, some possible Wuikinuxv phrases are personal names are included in "Kwakiutl ethnographic materials" (Item 31). Additional materials may be distinguished in the future as further detailed indexing of the Boas & Hunt materials is conducted.

Description: The Anthony F. C. Wallace Papers are a vast collection of materials relating to Wallace's work at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and history. See the finding aid for a detailed discussion of Wallace's long and varied career, and for an itemized list of the collection's contents. Though further research might yield more results, five items relating to the Wyandots (or Hurons, or Huron-Wyandots) have been identified. See the Charles Garrad file in Series I. Correspondence. In Series II. Research Notes and Drafts: A. Research, there is an undated folder on "Huron and Haudenosaunee materials [Notes]." In Series IX. Indian Claims, there are two folders labeled "Bauman, Robert F.--Ottawa, the Huron-Wyandot, and the Land" and a third folder labeled "Wyandot Indians--Notes." Robert F. Bauman was a lawyer and historian who specialized for a time as a research historian on Indian claims for a Cleveland law firm and was also briefly director of the Dearborn Historical Museum in the early 1950s.
