Description: "Observations while passing thro' the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Cherokee nations." No. 3 in Explorations in the Louisiana Country. Reverend Patrick Wilson describes his observations while traveling on a road built between Choctaw and Chickasaw country, including the state of Native-white relations and the growing white population in the area. At Muscle Shoals, he stays with Cherokee chiefs Doublehead and Skiowska. Notes that many Native peoples have good farms, good furnishings, good fences, and good stock, and that one Native man runs an inn.

Description: Materials relating to James M. Crawford's interest in and study of the Choctaw language. Items include card-sized paper slips, Choctaw-English and English-Choctaw, with pencilled notes in Series V. and two folders of Choctaw notebooks in Series IV-D. Research Notes & Notebooks--Other. Folder 1 contains a field notebook of Choctaw vocabulary and other linguistic material dated to winter 1971-1972. Ruth Farmer is noted as the Choctaw consultant and students Mary McCall, Marjory Holden, and Mr. Chappel are also noted as using the notebook and eliciting information (mostly vocabulary) from the consultant. Folder 2 contains a field notebook dated to 1973, and notes Phillip Martin, Tribal Chairman of Choctaws, as consultant. This notebook deals more with grammar and sentence structure and includes work on a story or history (in both Choctaw and English) revolving around Choctaw laws or treaties, including the observation that the Choctaws (perhaps Martin?) want the laws transcribed from English to Choctaw.

Description: "Memoire sur le district du Ouachita dans le province de la Louisianne." No. 1 in Explorations in the Louisiana Country. Charles Francois Adrien Le Paulmier, Chevalier d'Annemours was France's general consul to Virginia and Maryland. His journal provides a detailed account of the geography of the Louisiana territory, especially its waterways. The Ouachita District is the primary focus of his report. He describes its geography, crops, and economic potential, and provides a series of observations about indigenous cultures and histories in the area, including trading cultures, hunting patterns, and mounds. Particularly mentions the Catahoulas. These references may pertain to the Caddo, Choctaw, Tunica, and Ofo.
The original is in French, but the APS has a translation done by Robert Cain in 1973.

Description: The Mobilian material in James Crawford's "Recordings of Native American languages" collection consist of two sets of recordings pertaining to Crawford's research into remaining speakers of the Mobilian trade language, or "Mobilian Jargon." One recording is located in "Series 9: Mobilian," which is discussion and inquiry into the language with Arzelie Langley, who is interpreted into English by her granddaughter. This is conducted primarily in Choctaw and Koasati, with some Mobilian words and phrases. A second set of Mobilian recordings are scattered among "Series 14: Yuchi." See especially item 27-11, "Mobilian words and phrases," recorded with speaker Leonard Lavan, which includes conversation about use of the language and remaining speakers. Description: Mary Haas conducted extensive fieldwork on Tunica with last speaker Sesostrie Youchigant, subsequently publishing a grammar as her PhD dissertation, and later texts and a dictionary. Fourteen field notebooks can be found in the dedicated subseries in Series 2, along with abundant grammatical and lexical notes and sheet music. Tunica was an integral part of Haas' comparative work on the Gulf hypothesis, so extensive comparisons can be found, especially in the lexical slip files of Series 9. Haas' Tunica work also contains more ethnographic notes than most of her files. Photographs of Sesostrie Youchigant are present in Series 11 and can be viewed at the Digital Library.
