Description: Beginning with his college life as an undergraduate at Harvard (1905-1906), Morley's diaries continue through his earliest travels and explorations of Central America (1907-1944), with information on the study of Mayan hieroglyphs, publications, the study of Central American ruins, and the manners and customs of the native people. Five volumes are devoted to four separate archaeological expeditions: Copan expedition (1937), Uxmal expedition (1941-1942), Central American expedition (1944), and Guatemala and Honduras expedition (1947). Formal and detailed field notes form the bulk of Morley's archaeological work. Includes 106 ink sketches and 105 pencil sketches by archaeologist Sylvanus Morley to illustrate his excavation descriptions of Mayan sites in Yaxchilan (1931), Calakmul (1932), Copan (1937, 1947), and Uxmal (1941-42). Primarily Mayan glyphs, images include diagrams of stairways, pyramids, and ball courts. Originals at Peabody Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Description: The Taos materials in the ACLS collection consists of two items in the "Taos" section of the finding aid. One is set of "Taos texts and grammatical notes" (item T1b.3) containing four letters with literal and free translations and grammatical notes, plus 6 texts, most with free translations and notes, plus notes on orthography. There is also a "Sketch of the Taos language" (item T1b.2) concerning morphology and semasiology, plus three letters from an unidentified consultant, all with interlinear and free translation and notes.

Description: The Tarahumara materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items located in the "Tarahumara" section of the finding aid. There is a set of texts with interlinear Spanish translations (item U6a.2), recorded by Wendell Bennett, with a related lexical file (item U6a.1) of 1800+ word slips derived from the texts. Material recorded by Jules Henry consists of 3 field notebooks (item U6a.4) with texts with interlinear translations and biographical information on speakers who provided the stories. Henry's related "Tarahumara materials" (item U6a.3) includes a diverse set of items, including word lists, a draft dictionary, additional texts, a Spanish-Tarahumara newsletter, and a "Cartilla Tarahumara de Lectura" with photomechanical prints depicting housing, utensils, clothing, and social customs.

Description: Two items by Mexican linguist Francisco Belmar. The first item, "Las lenguas habladas por Los Indigenos and Indian tribes of the state of Oaxaca and their languages," includes a lengthy exposition on Mexican languages, emphasizing relationships with, and discussing Mixe, Zoque, Chontal, and Chochotec (intended for delivery at a session of the International Congress of Americanists, 1895, but never delivered) and a pencil draft of Belmar (1902) [See also Belmar (1902)]. The second item, "Curso de Lengua Mixe," is a brief elementary textbook for teaching Mixe to Spanish speakers, complete with exercises, texts, and lexical comments.
