Description: Two items relating to the Odawa (Ottawa) language have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. They are both in Subcollection I. They consist of an "Ottawa" file with several pages of handwritten linguistic notes in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes; and a file labeled "Williams, Angeline--Genealogy" with genealogical information about the Williams family in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-C: Other. Angeline Williams was an Odawa language consultant who worked with C. F. Voegelin, Erminine Wheeler-Voegelin, and Leonard Bloomfield, and participated in a field methods course taught by Voegelin and Bloomfield.

Description: The Penobscot materials in the Frank Siebert Papers are concentrated in Series III. Siebert collected census material, treaties and treaty minutes, placenames, with a strong representation of songs, stories, and linguistic materials. There are detailed notes about Indian claims in Maine and genealogical information. There are also educational materials for the teaching of the Penobscot language as well as a wealth of information on Penobscot linguistics. Series V, Siebert's notebooks, have extensive grammatical, phonetic, and vocabulary of the Penobscot language. Both Series III and V reflect Siebert's deep interest in the history of Maine and the Eastern Abenaki including archaeological, pre-history, and colonial era documents such as the Eliot Bible, which Siebert owned a rare copy in his library, which was sold at auction. Series VI and VII contain various drafts of essays on Penobscot culture, language, and history. Series XI contains 5 related photos of Louis Lolar, taken in 1933. Series XII contains approximately 3 hours of Penobscot language recordings, primarily from the 1930s and 1950s.

Description: Several items relating to the Southern Paiute language have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. In Subcollection I, there is a typed invitation in Paiute and English from Vivian Jake and Florence Voegelin inviting friends to dinner after "the Navaho Show" in Series I. Correspondence; five "Paiute, Southern" folders dating to 1959-1961 and containing field notes made with Vivian Jake (along with references to associated tapes/reels throughout, and genealogical information in #4) in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes; and four unbound Southern Paiute texts in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-B: Texts. In Subcollection II, there is a letter to Vernon E. Jake, Chairman of the Kaibab Paiute Tribal Council, regarding a proposed language speaker census (with particular interest in discerning how well children really know the language) in Series I. Correspondence; and a Southern Paiute folder in Series II. Research Notes, Subseries IX. Uto-Aztecan, except Hopi. Finally, Southern Paiute is also one of the languages Voegelin considered in a grammatical analysis of Uto-Aztecan languages. Drafts of seven chapters of this work can be found in Series III.
