Materials attributed to Mason include a bibliography composed of about 300 cards primarily on South American languages, including many entries not in the Handbook of South American Indians; a notebook of observations on the distribution, relationships, etc., of South American languages; a file with correspondence, bibliography, draft of introduction, etc., relating to his contribution to the Handbook of South American Indians; a 166-page essay on the preconquest history and culture of the Andean region (mostly Peru) through the medium of artifacts preserved in the University Museum (University of Pennsylvania); two copies of Mason's "Andean Civilization," including bibliography, for the Encyclopedia Britannica (1960); two copies of the preface to the Spanish edition of "Ancient Civilizations of Peru," with a memorandum from Alfred Kidder II to Mason regarding recent developments in Central Andean archaeology; an incomplete essay titled "Status and problems of research in the Native Languages of South America," primarily concerned with historical linguistics and genetic relationship; and a file of notes on genetic relationships, subgrouping, etc., from published sources or giving his own impressions: Kamakan, Choroti, Ashluslay Kaduveo, Mataco; Malali, Mashakal, Ge, Vejoz, Coropo, Motilon, Towothl, Kaingang, Subtiaba, Hokan, Coroado, etc.. Wright to Captain Colon Eloy Alfaro proposing that expeditions be sent to Ecuadorean Oriente for study in linguistics, ethnology, etc. Materials attributed to others than Mason include two essays or drafts by John Peabody Harrington on the affiliation of Witoto [Huitoto, probably Murui Huitoto but possibly Nüpode Huitoto], Miranya [aka Miraña or Miranha, now known as Bora] and Guaranian/Tupi-Guarani [Guarani, represented by Cocama], one with Mason's comments; 27 pages of Kagaba [Kogi] texts with interlinear Spanish translation and lists of animals, plants, body parts, natural phenomena, kinship terms, etc., with Spanish and English glosses; and Eugenio Garro's "Geographical distribution of the Native languages and dialects of Peru," an article submitted for the Handbook of South American Indians (marked "not printed in Handbook"). Materials include 10 pages of Lower Pima [Pima Bajo] notes, part of Brugge's contribution to an article co-authored with Mason; 85 pages of notes, drafts, letters, etc. relating to the same article, including bibliographic items and a linguistic map of northwestern Mexico; a file of correspondence, draft reports on, and expenses for a 1953 Nevome [aka Lower Pima, Pima Bajo] or Lower Pima Expedition, a research trip to Sonora, Mexico (correspondents include Dale S. King, James McConnell, Edward H. Spicer, Fernando Pesqueira, David Lopez Molina, Robert J. Weitlaner, John E. Heimnick, and Robert J. Drake); 13 pages of Nevome [Pima Bajo] Vocabularies, with notes from three informants at Santa Ana rancheria near Onavas, Sonora; 2 pages of Nevome [Pima Bajo] grammatical notes, primarily a listing of locative particles and adverbs, from an unspecified source; circa 1,000 cards of Pima Bajo linguistics notes (alphabetically arranged), most with English translation and some keyed to informant, along with three letters between Brugge and Mason discussing the language and Brugge's work; 25 pages of notes on Yaqui and Northern Tepehuan recordings to be sent to Indiana University, including the contents of Southern Tepehuan recordings (in hand of John Alden Mason), two Pima Bajo texts, Spanish translations for four texts, and a phonetic key for Pima Bajo; and Brugge's "History of the Pima Bajo of the mountains" (1960) a ten-page essay discussing information from historical and archaeological sources regarding the Pima in the villages of Yecora and Maicoba, Sonora, and Yepachic and Moris, Chihuahua. Three items, all written from Gallup, New Mexico, are described as "Brugge-Annon trip to Sonora-Log, itinerary, list of photos, journal. Letter to John Alden Mason." Dated February 1956, #4670 gives identification for two photographs showing pottery and baskets and for two showing terrain near Rancho Los Tepalcates; #4671 (March 1956) gives information about baskets shown in four photos (two photos lacking); and #4672 (June 1958) concerns mistreatment of Maicoba Pimas by whites, i.e., the taking of land, cattle, church offerings, etc. A Brugge-Annon trip is also mentioned in #4668, Brugge's correspondence with Mason 1955-1960, which totals 175 pages and concerns Brugge's work on Pima Bajo and Navajo; problems arising from mistreatment of Maicoba Pimas by whites; log, itinerary, list of photographs, and journal of Brugge-Annon trip to Sonora; correspondence with the Wenner-Grenn Foundation and Paul Fejos; and an essay on distribution, religion, fiestas, social structure, economy, houses and furnishings, handicrafts, etc., of the Pima Bajo.

Description: Materials relating to John Alden Mason's interest in and research on Tohono O'odham language and culture, and particularly of his preparation of "The Language of the Papago of Arizona" (1950), informally referred to as his Papago grammar. Of particular interest will be materials by Juan Dolores, a Tohono O'odham man who both published his own work on Tohono O'odham (then called Papago) language and culture and also worked as a consultant for Mason, Alfred Kroeber, and others. Dolores items in this collection include three notebooks (numbered 10, 11, and 12, each with a table of contents) on Papago [Tohono O'odham] grammar apparently in the hand of Dolores with some additional notes by Mason; a table of contents listing myths and songs in notebook #14, which is missing; 138 pages of Papago [Tohono O'odham] texts with interlinear English and two copies of "The Sacred Case" myth in Northern Tepehuan with English translation. There is also a Papago [Tohono O'odham] text (in ink) without translation, attributed to Miguel Garcia, with corrections by Juan Dolores (in pencil). This collection also contains many of Mason's field notes and writings on Tohono O'odham, including a notebook of field notes on kinship terms, vocabulary, texts, comparisons with Tepecano, etc.; a notebook of songs with English interlinear translations, ethnographic and archaeological notes, Tepecano and Papago [Tohono O'odham] comparisons, etc.; two boxes comprising a linguistics card file of Papago [Tohono O'odham] words with English glosses, along with grammatical or other explanatory notes; miscellaneous notes on kinship terms, paradigms, and various other grammatical matters; a four-page summary of the general characteristics of Tohono O'odham without examples; drafts of an article by Mason giving Dolores' verb conjugations and a letter of George Herzog's comments on same, along with various notes, lists, analyses, etc., on Papago [Tohono O'odham] adjectives, nouns, verbs, pronouns, etc., much of it from Dolores; notes on Papago nominal stems ending in l, li, or ta based on list of stems from Dolores, with cognates from Pima, Northern Tepehuan, and Tepecano; four pages on Papago words with p and t, with English glosses; Tohono O'odham texts with interlinear translations in English and occasionally Spanish; and Mason's comments on William Kurath's "A brief introduction to Papago."
