Description: The Omaha and Ponda materials in the ACLS collection consist primarily of four items located in the "Omaha" section of the finding aid. The earliest materials (items X7a.2 and X7a.3) are texts and grammatical notes recorded by Francis La Flesche, including texts with literal and free translations, and terms of relationship among the Omahas. Also includes correspondence with Franz Boas. The materials by Boas, which were based on prior sources, including La Flesche, consist of a word list comparing Omaha to Lakota (item X.2), and a lexicon of approximately 1600 word slips (iem X7a.1). In the "Iowa" section of the finding aid, Frida Hahn's manuscript grammar, "The Ponca Language," is found among Gordon Marsh's Iowa materials (parts #8-9 of item X4a.2).

Description: Audio recordings of interviews and narrations primarily by or with Louis Bird of Peawanuck. Major topics include Omushkegowak folklore, history, wihtigo, and other topics. The recordings include consist of three general types: stories and commentaries recorded directly by Louis Bird in Cree with some English explanation; interviews conducted by Louis Bird in Cree with elders and other residents of Peawanuck, Attawapiskat, and Kashechewan; and interviews by Maureen Matthews with Louis Bird in English on a variety of topics. Some of the interviews conducted by Matthews were recorded in the context of producing radio documentaries for CBC Radio One. Topics include Indians' hope to hear Whitefield preach (thwarted when he went on to Boston because no congress was to be held at Sir William Johnson's); Rev. Samuel Kirkland; Minto's belief that Oneida share a common origin with Europeans because they identify Great and Small Bear by the same image; and Quaker missionaries' offer to set up a blacksmith shop to train Indians, to find iron, and to apprentice Indians as farmers.

Description: The Onondaga materials in the Lounsbury collection include a French-Onondaga from 1860 in Series II. There are numerous audio recordings including that of a Condolence Ceremony and the Feast of the White Dog (Guy-wee-oo) in Series VII. (These recordings are restricted due to cultural sensitivity.) The correspondence, in Series I, includes Harold Blau's mention of a recording in Onondaga of part of Handsome Lake's code, William Fenton's work with Howard Sky on the Goldenweiser version of the Great Law of Peace in Onondaga, Michael Foster's description of collecting versions of the Thanksgiving Address in Onondaga, Cara Richards on Onondaga recordings.
