Extent:45 pages; 1 notebook (14 pages); Circa 1,500 slips
Description: The Chemakum materials in the ACLS collection consist of 5 items in the "Chemakum" section of the finding aid. The earliest item (W3b.3, "Chemakum vocabulary") is a word list recorded by George Gibbs, circa 1853, from a woman named Jule, slave and mistress of King George, a Clallam chief. This list is in English orthography with accents marked, and includes parts of the body, household objects, material objects, animals, adverbs, and verbs. Subsequent fieldwork includes a notebook by Manuel Andrade (item W3b.5), containing an English-Chimakum vocabulary, with an attempt to verify use of consultant Louise Webster by Franz Boas at Port Gamble in 1890. Additional material includes linguistic analyses by Sapir and Swadesh (items W3b.2 and W3b.4). Lastly, an extensive lexicon of over 1,500 slips (item W3b.1) was compiled by Franz Boas, based upon field work conducted in 1890. Boas's original field notebook is found as Notebook 3 in "Field notes on Chinookan and Salishan languages and Gitamat, Molala, and Masset" (item Pn4b.5) located in the "Chinook" section of the finding aid. Some Klallam language information may be intermixed with the Chemakum language information, but not currently distinguished.

A short lexicon is in the field notebooks of Series 2 Subseries ‘Yurok', while the majority is lexica, phonetics, morphological and ethnographic notes by Sapir himself in Series 9. Morris Swadesh also reinterpreted Sapir and others' phonetic Chimariko into a phonemic orthography, also in Series 9, and sent some materials to Haas as correspondence in Series 1. Additionally, Chimariko is scattered throughout comparative work.

Description: The Ditidaht materials in the ACLS collection are found in the "Nitinat" section of the finding aid. The bulk of the material consists of field notebooks (item W2b.2, "Nitinat field notebooks") recorded by Mary Haas and Morris Swadesh primarily from Chief Peter (Batlisqawa) and his son Jasper of Port Renfrew in 1931. The notebooks include numerous texts of traditional stories, histories, autobiographical stories, and other content including place names, vocabularies, and grammatical notes. A full table of contents of these notebooks is available. An extensive lexical file of over 6700 terms, derived from these field notebooks, is also found in this collection as item W2b.1, "Nitinat lexical file". Description: The most noteworthy aspect of Mary Haas' Ditidaht file, stemming from fieldwork conducted with Morris Swadesh as her first fieldtrip, is a fairly detailed transcription of songs collected. Series 2 contains the transcriptions and Series 10 the cassette copies, while the original tapes are housed at the Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music. There is much overlap with Nuu-chah-nulth, as Haas frequently identified correspondences between them. A sizeable lexical file (Series 9) and correspondence with many, especially Edward Sapir and George Herzog (Series 1) may also be of interest.
