Description: Part of a collection comprised of religious and linguistic materials in various Native American languages. Many were written by Jesuit missionaries of New France. These particular items include a catechism for Mi'kmaq children; a Mi'kmaq grammar copied by Rev. M. G. P. Cote, cure de Ste. Croix, and given by him to the Seminaire de Quebec in 1907; missionary Joseph-Marie Bellenger's book of Sunday sermons, including instructions and notes about the Mi'kmaq language (with Bellenger's observation that his notes are based on Maillard but that he has often had to supply endings), as well as a page of pictographs; Pierre-Antoine-Simon Maillard's manuscript containing religious doctrine and exercises, a table of deaths, notes on the principles of the French languages, and a table of contents, with a biographical note by Bellenger added in 1816 and 10 pages of pictographs with their meanings in Mi'kmaq; and Maillard's 1820 volume on the Mi'kmaq language, copied by Bellenger. Materials include Mathevet's translation into Mohawk of the Old Testament (3 volumes); New Testament (8 volumes); sermons (10 volumes); formal religious materials (16 volumes); an anonymous Algonquin manuscript; and an anonymous volume of catechism, prayers, and hymns in Huron. Items include an undated French-Onondaga dictionary attributed to Magon de Terlaye, and an unattributed list of members of "Les trois confrairies de la Ste. Famille du Sault de St. Regis," an Indian women's religious society, dated to 1821-1865. The latter also includes members' date of joining and describes their duties; prayers and rules of conduct for the group are written in Onondaga. Includes a petit catechisme, a literal, page-by-page translation into Ottawa of the "Catechisme des fetes principales de l'annee publie a Chartres par Etienne Massot le Jeune en 1683"; and "Racines de la langue 8ta8aise et algonquine," A to S only. The last 56 pages of the latter contain "Instructions sur les exhortations relatives aux commandements" while the cover reads "Instruction sur les symboles." Description: Part of a collection comprised of religious and linguistic materials in various Native American languages. Many were written by Jesuit missionaries of New France. These items include canticles, chants, prayers, and dictionaries in the Wyandot language (called Huron by the Jesuits). There is also an item labeled "Notes et manuscrits divers," attributed to Girault de Villeneuve, missionary with the Hurons at Jeune Lorette near Quebec, which includes prayers, "predications," a 1762 manuscript titled "Des Missions," and "Une breve histoire des Hurons." Originals are at the Bibliotheque de la Legislature, Province de Quebec, and originals of all other items are at Laval University, Seminaire de Quebec. See also Barbeau (1949) and Barbeau (1960).
