Description: The Apache materials in the ACLS collection consist of 3 items. Two are found in the "Apache" section of the finding aid. These are an "Apache (Chiricahua, Lipan, and Jicarilla) morphological lexicon" (item Na31.1) by an unidentified author (possibly Harry Hoijer), with arranged in tables, with conjugations of all prefixes (aspectual and pronominal) and combinations thereof; and a "San Carlos Apache Lexical File" (item Na31.4) compiled by Goddard. In the "Athapaskan" section of the finding aid, see "Field notes in California Athabascan languages" (item Na.2) which contains 2 notebooks of Kiowa Apache materials (including text, discussion of warfare, list of specimens and cost).

Description: Items relating to Hoijer's field work on the Chiricahua and Mescalero Apache dialects and as he prepared the resulting work for publication. These include several notebooks, five containing Chiricahua texts with interlinear English glosses and English translations and one containing Mescalero texts in phonemic transcription, with interlinear English glosses, and English translation and additional notes on facing page. There are also 23 pages of typescript taken from these notebooks, containing English translations only [not proofread] and several tales, which are listed in the guide to the Harry Hoijer Collection. Sam Kenoi is mentioned as the primary informant and translator. A Lipan-speaker, Crook-Neck, is also mentioned. There are also two items related to the San Carlos (Western Apache) dialect: David Mandelbaum's work with informant Lewis Russell in 1933 and 325 pages (undated) of phonetic texts (no English translations) with a note inside that reads "San Carlos or Chiricahua?"

Description: Items relating to the study of Dene languages, including a letter from Sapir to Hoijer regarding comparative Athapascan linguistics and two items composed of Hoijer's notes and writings on the subject. One is his 27-page "Comparative Athapascan Affixes," including charts of comparative data taken from 33 Athapascan languages and dialects (with English glosses). The other consists of about 300 handwritten slips on Comparative Athapascan with comparative lexical data described as Sarsi, Chipewyan, and Navajo, alphabetically arranged, according to the English gloss.

Description: Galice word and phrase list from a recording made with Galice speaker Hoxie Simmons at Siletz Reservation in 1956. (Original recording housed at the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages.) Handwritten on looseleaf, listing lexical items in phonemic transcription, with English glosses, e.g., dalbai. Lexicon includes nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs, adjectives, as well as inflected forms of nouns ('my wife, your wife, his wife') and phrases (e.g., 'I shall see it', 'what are you doing?'). According to Kendall, nouns and verbs with person markers, but no complete paradigms. In "Series I: Correspondence," also see letter from Dorothy Hoijer to Whitfield Bell for brief info on the recording.

Description: Materials by both Harry Hoijer and Father Berard Haile, O.F.M., relating to the academic study of Jicarilla Apache. These include several Jicarilla texts--including many Coyote stories--in phonemic transcription, with interlinear English glosses and many explanatory notes of ethnographic interest; Haile's rewriting of Pliny Earle Goddard's "Jicarilla Texts"; and what seems to be a typed draft of a monograph. These include Hoijer's Sarsi slip file containing about 900 slips: typed index cards illustrating postpositions; handwritten slips with examples of verbal data, including negation, progressives, iteratives, etc. Taken from Sapir's notebooks. Slips are keyed to notebook and page. Also Sapir's "Tales of the Sarcee Indians," Sarsi tales in phonemic transcription, one or more copies of the typescript, with English glosses written in Sapir's hand.
