Description: Materials relating to James M. Crawford's interest in and study of the Ojibwe (sometimes Ojibwa) language. These materials are located in an undated folder in Series IV-D. Research Notes & Notebooks--Other, and consist of about 50 sheets of handwritten notes and outlines. Topics include sounds, morphology, and categories of inflection, but the majority of sheets comprise one set (numbered 1-44) that break a story down in Ojibwe on the left with English translation on the right. The story involves a young man who, fasting for a vision, dreamt of a mirror. Later in life, the mirror came to his aid by rendering him invisible when an enemy war party attacked him, allowing him to defeat the enemy warriors nearly single-handedly.

The language consultant is identified as Joe Frank, age 21, from the Big Cypress Indian Reservation. Description: Materials relating to James M. Crawford's interest in and study of the Shoshone (formerly Shoshoni) language. These materials are located in three folders in Series IV-D. Research Notes & Notebooks--Other. "Shoshoni Notebook #1" is a field notebook dated to 1967-1968 containing linguistic data. Language consultants and contacts mentioned include Mrs. Dorothy Le Clair, her sister Lillian Vallely who worked at the agency office, Mrs. Bessie Judson, Joe Gross, Ernie Devinne, Bea Condit, Jon Weyley, etc. "Shoshoni Notebook #2" is a continuation, picking up soon after #1 ends and going to May, 1968, and is only about a quarter full. This notebook contains work on a story (including a full English translation) about two brothers, the elder who disappeared while out hunting and the younger, Mosquito-Blood, who found the remains of the elder in the teeth of an infant; he buried the remains and the elder returned. The final folder, "Shoshoni Notes," is dated to 1967 and contains about 20 sheets of linguistic notes. Consultants mentioned include Mr. Pocatella and Mr. and Mrs. Racehorse, all audited with Swedish folklorist and linguist Sven Liljeblad.

Description: Materials relating to James Crawford's interest in and study of Siouan languages. Items include 2 folders on "Hokan and Siouan Words for Mouth" [1970-1971] in Series III-D. Works by Crawford--Other. Folder 1 contains a brief handwritten explanation of the research project, which revolved around the phonological sequence "ya" in words pertaining to the mouth; over 100 sheets of paper titled "Mouth," each containing linguistic examples for a different lists of languages considered, some with examples; a chart of Crawford's data, organized by language and with words (when available) for "mouth," "swallow," "be hungry," "chin," and "throat, neck"; and miscellaneous notes. Folder 2 contains a first draft of the article, with endnotes and bibliography, dated to March 1970, and several subsequent drafts, including a clean copy. Draft pages are numbered but some appear to be out of order. Crawford culled examples from many languages outside of the Hokan and Siouan language families. See also related material in "The Phonological Sequence 'ya' in Words Pertaining to the Mouth in Southeastern and Other Indian Languages" [1975] in the same series. In Series IV-B. Research Notes & Notebooks--Yuchi there are two Siouan-related folders, "Possible Cognates to Yuchi in Siouan, Atakapa, Yava, Maider, etc.," which contains 9 full sheets and 2 slips of handwritten notes comparing Yuchi, Biloxi, Ofo, Catawba, Atakapa, Maidu, Yava, Wocco, Tutelo, etc., and "Some Possible Cognates Between Yuchi and Siouan and Between Yuchi and Tunica," containing a typed three-page chart comparing Yuchi, Dakota, and Biloxi (also with some Catawba examples).
