Description: From 1968-1970, the anthropologist Robert E. MacLaury conducted fieldwork on Zapotec (Oto-Manguean) language and ethnography at Santa Maria Ayoquesco de Aldama, Oaxaca. His masters thesis based on that research, "Ayoquesco Zapotec: Ethnography, Phonology, and Lexicon," was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a master's degree in anthropology at the University of the Americas in 1970. Includes eighty black and white photocopy photographs of Zapotec Indians in Santa Maria Ayoquezco de Aldama, Oaxaca, Mexico from 1968-1970. Taken by MacLaury while conducting fieldwork for his thesis, the images reflect the social life and customs of the people, including clothing, utensils, daily activities and dwellings. Description: The Oaxaca materials in the Boas Field Notebooks and Anthropometric Data collection consist of 1 notebook from 1912. This notebook contains vocabularies, including names of speakers from whom they were elicited, and some dates and place names, for "Pochutla" (Pochutec), and Chatino. "[Santiago] Yeitepec" is listed in one Chatino word list, so the specific language may be Western Highlands Chatino. (65 pages) Folkloristic texts and songs in Spanish. Description: The Zapotec materials in the Elsie Clews Parsons papers consist of materials in multiple sections of the finding aid. In Subcollection I, Series I, "Correspondence," see "Mitla, Town of Souls" and Parsons' "Letters in re. Mitla, Town of the Souls." In Subcollection I, Series II, "Notes, manuscripts, etc." the final notebook in "No. 11 Taos notebooks" is predominantly in Spanish and concerns fieldwork in Oaxaca among the Zapotec and other groups. Item "No. 19. Mitla journals" contains notebooks from Oaxaca, primarily concerning Zapotec matters. Item "No. 28. Mitla songs and photographs (Oaxaca region)" includes 14 songs, 183 photos, ca. 100 negatives of Oaxaca; 3 drawings and an article on Zapotec words; letter from E. D. Merrill to Franz Boas, May 13, 1930. Item "No. 53" contains a Zapotec-related newspaper clipping.
