Description: The Navajo materials in the ACLS collection include 3 items in the "Navajo" section of the finding. The largest of these is Sapir's "Navajo texts, field notes, and word lists" (item Na31.5), which includes 17 notebooks of texts with interlinear translations and a word slip file derived from these texts that numbers around 11,000 slips. There is also Sapir's "A list of Navaho stems" (item Na31.2) and Morris Swadesh's class notes (Na31.3) based on Edward Sapir's lectures on the Navaho language, containing grammatical notes, texts with translation, 175-word vocabulary, and a brief descriptive essay. In the "Yana" section of the finding aid, see also Swadesh's "Yana and Navaho notes from Edward Sapir" (item H6.1) containing class notes from Sapir's lectures on Yana, Navaho, with comparative Athapascan material. Description: The Anthony F. C. Wallace Papers are a vast collection of materials relating to Wallace's work at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and history. Though further research might yield more results, three folders of materials directly pertaining to the Navajo (called "Navaho" in the finding aid) have been identified. These items are all in Series IV. Works by Wallace A. Professional and include two folders on Wallace's introduction to Evelyn Hatcher's "Visual Metaphors: A Formal Analysis of Navaho Art" (1974) and Wallace's "Psychic Unity of Iroquois and Navaho Witchcraft." Description: Five items relating to Navajo language and culture have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. They are all in Subcollection II. There is relevant correspondence with M. Dale Kinkade (regarding a comparative work on color and anatomical terms in Salish, Navajo, and English); Navajo material in a folder labeled "Athabascan (Chipewyan)" as well as a separate Navajo folder in Series II. Research Notes, Subseries II. Na-Dene; a Navajo story ("Coyote files with the Birds") in the Southwestern Indian Tales category in Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries II: American Indian Tales for Children; Harry Tschopik's map of "Indian Languages in New Mexico, A.D. 1600" (1938) in Series III. Description: John Alden Mason's correspondence with David M. Brugge, found in Series I of the collection, contains some letters pertaining to Diné matters. One letter of note is from March 28, 1958, from Aneth, Utah, where he was conducting archaeological research for Navajo Tribal Office of Land Use and Surveys, and mentions being welcomed by members of the Native American Church. The Brugge correspondence is frequently about his research in other areas, such as with Indigenous peoples in northern Mexico. The John Alden Mason Papers may contain other information about Diné matters that are not currently identified.
