Description: The only Cree materials in the Charles E. Fiero Papers are "A Report on Coastal Montagnais-Naskapi by Helen Hisey and Charles Fiero" in Series I, with possibly similar materials on CD in Series II. Despite being titled "Coastal Montagnais-Naskapi", this is likely Southern East Cree, as the consultants are residents of Eastmain and Moose Factory, on James Bay. Fieldwork was done at Mokahum Indian Bible School, Cass Lake, Minnesota, where Fiero was working. The material includes grammatical analysis, interlinear texts, and lexica.

Description: The Dakota and Lakota materials in the ACLS collection consist of a very large and diverse set of materials, and are located in the "Dakota" section of the finding aid, which provides a detailed listing of all contents. The vast majority of these materials were composed and assembled by Ella Deloria during the 1930s, both recorded from contemporary speakers and from various historical manuscript sources, which were sent to Franz Boas. The bulk of Deloria's materials are stories and speeches in typewritten manuscript form, with a transcription in the original language, followed by a literal word-for-word translation, then a free translation in English, and a section of footnotes commenting upon the original text and translation decisions. Some of her manuscripts occasionally lack one or more of these sections. These texts cover a wide range of topics, from traditional narratives, historical accounts, autobiographical stories, descriptions of games, customs, ceremonies, etc., and speeches, often concerning political affairs and economic conditions from the late-19th century to the 1930s. Names of numerous speakers are also given in the manuscripts themselves. Some of these materials were published, but most were not. Note that Deloria identifies the language recorded by using the terms "Teton" for Lakota language, and "Santee" and "Yankton" to indicate Eastern and Western dialects of Dakota language. The collection also includes a much smaller amount of material by Boas and others, primarily consisting of linguistics notes and musical analysis. A full list of places where the material was recorded has not yet been assembled.

Description: The Anthony F. C. Wallace Papers are a vast collection of materials relating to Wallace's work at the intersection of anthropology, psychology, and history. See the finding aid for a detailed discussion of Wallace's long and varied career, and for an itemized list of the collection's contents. Though further research might yield more results, approximately 22 items directly relating to Dakota peoples (also called Sioux by Wallace) have been identifed. All of these materials relate to land claims by the Sisseton-Wahpeton, Mdewakanton, and Wapakoota Sioux, with whom the Yankton Sioux consolidated their claim in 1958, based on the 1851 treaty line in Minnesota. Materials include research and writings by Wallace and by his assistant Michal Kane and Wallace's correspondence with the legal representatives of the Dakota claimants. There are some relevant materials in Series I. Correspondence filed under New Directions, Seymour Parker, Pauline Shortridge, and John Wozniak. However, most of these folders reside in the alphabetically-organized Seriex IX. Indian Claims, and are as follows: "Dakota Indians--Notes," "Dakota Indians--Wallace, Anthony F.C.-- Eastern Dakota: Outline of Locations, Population, Culture and History, 1800-1862" (1957), "Kane, Michal--Dakota (Eastern Dakota): Notes," "Kane, Michal--Safi-Sioux Conflict: Notes and Explanation for Map," "Kane, Michal--Sioux Claims: Calendar of Selections from Senate and House Documents," "Kane, Michal--Sioux's Eye View of Minnesota History," "Marest, Gabriel, 1662-1714--Letter in Neill, N.D., History of Minnesota (extract)," "Miscellaneous Manuscript Collections--Historical Societies--Minnesota," "Sioux--Correspondence," Sioux--Correspondence: Cragun, John W.," "Siouan Indians--Correspondence: Sonosky, Marvin (Finances)," "Sioux Exhibits--Exhibits: Sac and Fox Cases, Bureau of Indian Affairs," "Sioux--Maps," "Sioux--Notes by AFCW #1," "Sioux--Notes by AFCW #2," "Sioux--Sisseton and Wahpeton Bands or Tribes, etc. et. al. vs. the United States of America, Docket Nos. 142, 359-363: Proposed Findings of Fact and Brief in Support Thereof, in Behalf of Mississippi Sioux, Petitioners" (2 folders, volume 1 and 2), and "Sioux--Swanton, John Reed, 1873-1958 Early History of Eastern Siouan Tribes (notes)." Note that much of Wallace's Dakota (Sioux) material incorporated his earlier research on the Meskwaki (Sac and Fox) and other neighboring peoples, and there is a great deal of overlap among these entries.

Description: Almost all of the Charles E. Fiero Papers reflect varieties of Ojibwe/Anishinaabemowin. Fiero, a missionary linguist, is best known within the field for creating the double-vowel orthography. Series I (the bulk) contains manuscripts, while Series II contains a small volume of digital media that has yet to be transferred. The collection represents fieldwork originally done between 1957 and 1993 (bulk 1957-1970s), chronologically arranged by date of first fieldwork, and contains many retranscriptions and reanalyses by Fiero from subsequent decades, illustrating his understanding of the material. The fieldnotes mostly comprise lexica and texts, and individual folders typically contain detailed background information. Fieldwork was mostly conducted in Ontario. Place names include: Berens River, Deer Lake, Pauingassi, Pikangikum, Poplar Hill, Red Lake, White Earth, Cat Lake, Doghole Bar, Fort Hope, Grassy Narrows, McDowell Lake, North Spirit Lake, and Pickle Lake.
