Description: Between around 1948 and 1950, Amelia Susman did fieldwork in Brienz, Switzerland, documenting the local variety of Highest Allemanic German as well as the social and economic organization of the village and surrounding areas. This is all contained within Series I. Of particular note are a reel-to-reel tape and some associated transcriptions, a set of 13 field notebooks, a lexical file, topically-arranged ethnographic notes, some correspondence with consultants (scattered throughout), and preparatory materials for several publications.

Description: The Catawba materials in the Frank Siebert Papers are primarily concentrated in Series II. These consist of copies of secondary sources such as an "Indian Vocabulary from Fort Christanna, 1716, Catawba census notes, 1830-1929, land claim agreements, and a dictionary of Place names in South Carolina. Original materials include hundreds of pages of Siebert's FIeld notes and a Catawba vocabulary / dictionary done with Wes Taukchiray. There are also 14 sound recordings made with Sally Gordon in Series XII.

Description: The Dakota and Lakota materials in the ACLS collection consist of a very large and diverse set of materials, and are located in the "Dakota" section of the finding aid, which provides a detailed listing of all contents. The vast majority of these materials were composed and assembled by Ella Deloria during the 1930s, both recorded from contemporary speakers and from various historical manuscript sources, which were sent to Franz Boas. The bulk of Deloria's materials are stories and speeches in typewritten manuscript form, with a transcription in the original language, followed by a literal word-for-word translation, then a free translation in English, and a section of footnotes commenting upon the original text and translation decisions. Some of her manuscripts occasionally lack one or more of these sections. These texts cover a wide range of topics, from traditional narratives, historical accounts, autobiographical stories, descriptions of games, customs, ceremonies, etc., and speeches, often concerning political affairs and economic conditions from the late-19th century to the 1930s. Names of numerous speakers are also given in the manuscripts themselves. Some of these materials were published, but most were not. Note that Deloria identifies the language recorded by using the terms "Teton" for Lakota language, and "Santee" and "Yankton" to indicate Eastern and Western dialects of Dakota language. The collection also includes a much smaller amount of material by Boas and others, primarily consisting of linguistics notes and musical analysis. A full list of places where the material was recorded has not yet been assembled.

Description: The Haudenosaunee materials in the Snyderman Papers include folders labelled by author in Series I from William Fenton, Alexander General, Helen Harris, and Frank Speck, which contain correspondence concerning wampum belts in museum collections and related topics. In Series II there is a deed from 1796, an article about Condolence Ceremonies, and Six Nations (Haudenosaunee) Council Minutes from 1848. Description: Materials compiled by Pennsylvania Quaker missionary Halliday Jackson. Titled "Negotiations with the Indians of Pennsylvania by the Society of Friends to 1795," this assemblage contains a census of Native groups; miscellaneous information about various Native peoples; a verbatim collection of previous speeches and messages to and from various Native groups; letters from Timothy Pickering, Jasper Parrish [or Parish], and Isadore Chapin; and a discussion of various Iroquoian, Stockbridge, Brotherton, etc., peoples. Mention of Connediu (Handsome Lake). Original in possession of Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Description: The entire Nancy M. Farriss Papers contain research materials on the history of Maya society of Yucatán and surrounding areas (including Campeche, Quintana Roo, Guatemala, Honduras, and possibly Belize) since Spanish colonial occupation, and their experience under occupation. The majority of the collection (Series II to Series V) is copies of colonial archival documents from various archives in Yucatán, Mexico City, Spain and elsewhere. Series I contains copies of rare publications, notes on the materials, and other information relating to the research. Most of the material is in Spanish and English - a small folder in Series I titled "Yucatec language and literature" discusses Yucatec Maya, and there may be documents in Spanish with Yucatec Maya influence.

Description: The Pamela Wallace Papers include the full range of professional correspondence, research files including extensive copies of historical documents, works by Wallace, and a sizeable portion consisting of tapes recording Yuchi language classes, genealogical interviews, and tribal matters. The collection includes over 3,000 images of the social and ceremonial dances of the Yuchi people, consisting of 350 color slides, 1,300 color and black and white photographs with 1,400 color negatives.

Description: The Penobscot materials in the Frank Siebert Papers are concentrated in Series III. Siebert collected census material, treaties and treaty minutes, placenames, with a strong representation of songs, stories, and linguistic materials. There are detailed notes about Indian claims in Maine and genealogical information. There are also educational materials for the teaching of the Penobscot language as well as a wealth of information on Penobscot linguistics. Series V, Siebert's notebooks, have extensive grammatical, phonetic, and vocabulary of the Penobscot language. Both Series III and V reflect Siebert's deep interest in the history of Maine and the Eastern Abenaki including archaeological, pre-history, and colonial era documents such as the Eliot Bible, which Siebert owned a rare copy in his library, which was sold at auction. Series VI and VII contain various drafts of essays on Penobscot culture, language, and history. Series XI contains 5 related photos of Louis Lolar, taken in 1933. Series XII contains approximately 3 hours of Penobscot language recordings, primarily from the 1930s and 1950s.

Description: During the late 1930s, Amelia Susman Schultz conducted fieldwork on acculturation at the Round Valley Indian Reservation, California, for a Ph.D. thesis eventually published in 1976. Series II of the Amelia Susman Schultz Papers reflects both periods of research, though mostly the late 1930s. Of particular interest are: ten field notebooks from 1937, most containing some language data (undetermined as yet which languages) in addition to ethnographic notes from discussions with consultants; ethnographic notes arranged by subject (see items titled "Ethnographic notes by subject" in addition to "Notes on full sheets" and "Notes on half sheets"); descriptions of Round Valley's chronology, population history, genealogy, and socioeconomic surveys; and Schultz's works-in-progress, including the original dissertation.
