Description: Part of a collection comprised of religious and linguistic materials in various Native American languages. Many were written by Jesuit missionaries of New France. These particular items include a copy of a Montagnais dictionary attributed to Father Bonaventura Faber (or Favre) circa 1690; Montagnais prayers attributed to Father Pierre-Michel (or Petro) Laure, containing also a fragment of a letter dated 1724 noting "this is the third year that I live with the Tad8ssaciens," and denouncing the honesty and truthfulness of the Indians; and a register of baptisms, marriages, and deaths at La Mission du Domain du Roy from 1759 to 1774. Native peoples mentioned in the latter include Chicoutimi, Tadussaks, Mille Vaches, and Montagnais. Description: The entire Nancy M. Farriss Papers contain research materials on the history of Maya society of Yucatán and surrounding areas (including Campeche, Quintana Roo, Guatemala, Honduras, and possibly Belize) since Spanish colonial occupation, and their experience under occupation. The majority of the collection (Series II to Series V) is copies of colonial archival documents from various archives in Yucatán, Mexico City, Spain and elsewhere. Series I contains copies of rare publications, notes on the materials, and other information relating to the research. Most of the material is in Spanish and English - a small folder in Series I titled "Yucatec language and literature" discusses Yucatec Maya, and there may be documents in Spanish with Yucatec Maya influence.

Materials cover New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ontario. Originals in the Archives of the Moravian Church, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
