Description: The majority of the Virginia D. Hymes Papers relate to her work on the Warm Springs Reservation. This includes all or most of Series I, II, III and V. Series V (Card Files) contains around 35000 lexical files compiled by Hymes as well as David and Kay French and an unidentified researcher. Series III (Research Files) contains fieldnotes, texts and dictionary files. Series I (Correspondence) and IV (Works by Others) also mostly relate to Sahaptin research by others, including Bruce Rigsby (Yakima and Umatilla Sahaptin), Virginia Beavert, and Eugene Hunn.

Description: William Bright spent a “Salinan weekend” in Nipomo and Jolon, California, with Bill Jacobsen in 1954, discussed in correspondence with Nancy Evans alongside an original photograph of Dave Mora (Series 1). As a result of this and possibly other field trips, his Salinan materials consist of later correspondence with Bill Jacobsen (Series 1) and part of a field notebook with Joe Mora at Lockwood, California (Series 3 Subseries 1).

Description: The Salish-Kalispel materials in the ACLS collection consist of materials located primarily in the "Kalispel" section of the finding aid. Two early items are Joseph Giorda's "Appendix to the Kalispel-English dictionary, compiled by the Missionaries of the Society of Jesus" (item S1f.1) and John Post's "Kalispel grammar" (item S1f.2), based in part upon Giorda's material from the 1870s. There is also an undated lexicon by an unidentified author, based on work by Giorda (item S1f.3). In the "Salish" section of the finding aid, see also Teit's "Kalispel and Salish vocabulary" (item S1f.5) and Boas' "Notes on Salish inflections" (item S1f.4), based on Mengarini's "Flathead grammar" from 1861. In the "Thompson" section, Boas' "Suffixes in Thompson, with variants in other Salish languages" (item S1b.12) also contains some Kalispel terms. In the "Quinault" section, Teit's "Quinault vocabulary and paradigms" (item S2a.2) includes a letter to Boas describing his work in Flathead country.

Description: Several items relating to the Salishan languages have been identified in the C. F. Voegelin Papers. Nearly all are located in Subcollection II. There is relevant correspondence with M. Dale Kinkade (regarding a comparative work on color and anatomical terms in Salish, Navajo, and English), Stanley Newman (mentioning his recent work on Bella Coola and comparative Salish), and Jay Ellis Ransom (his work on Salish languages, Duwamish, Aleut, Flathead) in Series I. Correspondence. Series II. Research Notes, Subseries VIII. Undetermined Phylum Affiliation. These materials are in folders labeled as follows: "Mosan" [Voegelin originally labeled this folder "Mosan = Salish + Wakashan + Chimakuan = Quileute"]; "Salish"; "Salish: Bella Coola (Nuxalk), Coeur d'Alene"; "Salish: Duwamish" [these materials are attributed to Jay Ellis Ransom and include texts in Salish and English, with linguistic analysis, recorded from Mrs. Julia Siddle on the Muckleshoot Reservation in 1936]; and "Salish problem." This last folder contains correspondence compiled by Voegelin revolving around the "Salish Problem," including letters from Morris Swadesh (on analysis of Salish material by Boas and James Teit in the ACLS Collection, Mss.497.3.B63c), June Collins, Melville Jacobs. This folder also includes draft of a paper on Salish languages based upon the discussion in these letters. The final Salish item is located in Series IV. Works by Others and consists of Jay Ellis Ransom's "Pronomial System in Duwamish Salish" (1945). Researchers should also view the entries for specific Salishan languages.
