Chief Wild Horse claimed to be the last speaker of the Wampanoag dialect, and was a medicine man of the Mashpee Division, Sagamore of the New England Federation of Indians, and a representative of the League of North American Indians. Description: The Wampanoag materials in the Elsie Clews Parsons papers consist of one set of loose notes labelled "Martha's Vineyard - Notes," found in Subcollection II, Series IV, "Research Notes." These notes were recorded in 1919 from Lucina Jeffers (Wampanoag) of Aquinnah ("Gay Head"), who was aged 85 at the time. The notes concern folklore and customs on Martha's Vineyard and some genealogical information.
