The "Chontal" materials in this collection consist of one manuscript listed in the finding aid as item 26, Rafinesque's "Vocabulary of the Chontal language and its dialects reading from Guatimala to Panama & Darien," which includes some commentary on comparative linguistics of indigenous languages of Guatemala. Given his association of the language with Guatemala, the language may be Chol, which he lists as a "Chontal type" in the "The American Nations," published in 1836.
