Description: The Natchez materials in the Frank G. Speck Papers consist of references found in 3 folders, all in Subcollection I, Series I, Section IV, "Southeast." In the "Archeaology" subsection, see Fewkes' article, "Southeastern Pottery." In that same Section, under Yuchi, see, IV(15H3) "Yuchi miscellaneous notes," which contains a Natchez reference. Finally, see IV(15J4), "Natchez -- a. Miscellaneous notes," containing Speck's miscellaneous notes on the Natchez in Oklahoma, which includes newspaper clipping photographs of men and women, "last members" of the Natchez tribe. Additional research in Speck's materials may reveal other references. Researchers are advised to use the "Find" function in their browser (usually Ctrl + F or Command + F) to locate instances of the culture term(s) in the finding aid for this collection.

Description: Northern Tepehuan songs and stories originally recorded on wire by John Alden Mason in 1951, 1956, and 1958. Numerous short songs, folkloric and unidentified stories, description of pottery-making, conversation in Spanish on indigenous peoples, and texts and speech in the Macoba dialect of Pima Bajo. Recorded in Baborigame (Chihuahua,) Hermosillo, and Onavas (Sonora.) Tepehuan consultants are Gerónimo Aguilar, Andrés Carrillo, Antonio Carrillo, Celestina Carrillo, Dolores Carrillo, Juan Carrillo, Lorenzo Carrillo, Carolina Chaparro de Carrillo, Catalina Carrillo De Onteveros, Dolores Molina, and Julio Estrella. The Pima Bajo consultant is Nacho Lucero Coyote. Some material was recorded by David M. Brugge or Burton Bascom. Some of the interviews also discussions of various topics such as basket-making, berry picking, pottery, and cooking, and autobiographical stories about boarding school, racial discrimination, military service, speaking Potawatomi, and other topics. Description: Items relating to Quechua materials. Items include Peter A. Browne's letter regarding microscopic examination of hair of ancient Peruvians and modern Indians; S. Curson's report concerning Arequipa, Peru, including a climb of Mount Yachi, Quechua concepts of oxygen deficiency, and local Indians' attitude toward revelation of mine locations; Joseph E. Bloomfield's letter to John Vaughan concerning Peruvian vases taken from Temple of the Sun by Pizarro's men, received in Spain and now deposited with the American Philosophical Society for inspection; Samuel G. Morton's letter to Vaughan regarding a collection of antique Peruvian vessels "from ruins near Truxillo" deposited in his care for the APS by Marmaduke Burrough (a memoir by Dr. Burrough to follow); and Peter S. du Ponceau's letter to Johann S. Vater concerning Indian languages, especially those of Peru, requesting Vater's addenda so Du Ponceau can publish a translation of Vater's book, and information received from Don Pedro Perez, half-breed Quechua, regarding the "I am that I am" problem in linguistics, and regarding Basque and South American-Malay comparisons.
