Description: Materials from a wide range of indigenous cultures around the world are scattered throughout Series V of the A. Irving Hallowell Papers. Hallowell was interested in comparative ethnology on a number of topics including Bear Ceremonialism, textiles, artistic representations of Native people, basketry, kinship, pre-history, the development of language, family and marriage, nets and netting, etc. Much of this material constitutes Hallowell's reading notes on secondary sources and his research for very broad-based studies of humanity. Geographic regions represented in Series V include Australia, Africa, Pacific Islands, Polar regions California, Northwest coast, Southwest, and Southeast. The correspondence, in Series I, includes a very interesting, brief description of Franz Boas' first visit to the Kwakwaka'wakw community of Fort Rupert by the daughter of George Hunt in a folder labled Ronald Rohmer. There is also a letter from Edward Sapir detailing Nuu-chah-nulth bear hunting and face painting as well as sketches of netting needles.

Description: "Memoire sur le district du Ouachita dans le province de la Louisianne." No. 1 in Explorations in the Louisiana Country. Charles Francois Adrien Le Paulmier, Chevalier d'Annemours was France's general consul to Virginia and Maryland. His journal provides a detailed account of the geography of the Louisiana territory, especially its waterways. The Ouachita District is the primary focus of his report. He describes its geography, crops, and economic potential, and provides a series of observations about indigenous cultures and histories in the area, including trading cultures, hunting patterns, and mounds. Particularly mentions the Catahoulas. These references may pertain to the Caddo, Choctaw, Tunica, and Ofo.
The original is in French, but the APS has a translation done by Robert Cain in 1973.

Description: Letters discussing grave robbing of Indigenous ancestors' remains. Abadie (medical director for General Scott in forcing emigration) has two skulls of Seminole boys, one from tribe of Black Dirt, Hola-Te-Ematha and other from party led by John Cavallo (Cow-A-Gee). Describes Seminole burial practices. Has 3 female heads and 2 male heads from near Okee-Chobee, only 2 of 12 that were not "very offensive." Describes presumed Yemasee mounds. Talks of tuberculosis among the Indians. Treated wife of Cooper, daughter of King Paine, Seminole chief under the Spanish. Abadie follows up to see if skulls arrived, mentions cave near Fort Cap where he is sure there are flat-headed Indian skulls. Bachman has two skulls, one of which is to go to Edinburgh; both belong to Audubon. He will have them drawn if permissible. One skull is Ya-hadjo (Ma-hadjo?), a "grand rascal," other is that of famous chief (Mad Wolf) killed in Florida.

Skinner's 1929 "Reports of Pennsylvania Archaeological Survey," concerns the ethnological work of Dorothy P. (Mrs. Alanson) Skinner among Senecas at Quaker Bridge and Cornplanter Reservation, New York, with discussions of Frank G. Speck's field work among the Delawares and archaeological work at Clemson's Island, Pennsylvania. Schoff and Cadzow's collection of materials on the Irvine Mound Group in Warren County, Pennsylvania, consists of 100 photographs, 48 negatives, and 86 pages describing the excavations and artifacts, particularly of the Buckaloons site and the Nathaniel mound, and some letters to Edmund Carpenter from Frank M. Setzler, William N. Fenton, A. Wetmore, and Richard G. Morgan.
