Description: Materials relating to Ojibwe language and culture at the American Philosophical Society. Topics include George Antoine Belcourt's French-Ojibwe dictionary, particularly plans for its the presentation of Belcourt's memoir by the Smithsonian; a recent fire at the Smithsonian requiring $200,000 in repair work; Edwin James' Chippewa New Testament and his desire to publish a Chippewa grammar under the auspices of the APS; Walter James Hoffman's work at White Earth, Minnesota, where observed the Grand Medicine (Medawin) dance in detail and collected pictographic records of same on birch bark; Thomas L. McKenney's donation of a manuscript of McKenney (1827), out of respect to John Vaughan and the APS. Other individuals mentioned include Stephen H. Long, Ferdinand V. Hayden, J. Peter Lesley, Pliny E. Description: The C. F. Voegelin Papers contain notes, notebooks, stories, photographs, and other linguistic and ethnographic materials relating to Potawatomi (Pottowatomi) language and culture. These are located in both Subcollection I and Subcollection II of the Voegelin Papers. Materials in Subcollection I include relevant correspondence with Eli Lilly (regarding the discovery of inscribed stones and their possible meaning; see photographs referenced below) in Series I. Correspondence; a folder of Ojibwa [Ojibwe] and Pottowatomi [Potawatomi] comparative vocabularies in Series V. Research Notes, Subseries V-A: Language Notes; a folder of three undated "Pottowatomi" notebooks containing texts (with some English translation) and mentioning consultants Smallman Isaac, William George, and William Soney in Series VI. Notebooks; and two images of stones inscribed with Potawatomi petroglyphs, from Elkhart, Indiana, in Series VII. Photographs. These images have been digitized and are available through the APS's Digital Library. In Subcollection II, there are Potawatomi stories in the Eastern Woodland category in Series III. Works by Voegelin, Subseries II: American Indian Tales for Children.

Description: The majority of the Virginia D. Hymes Papers relate to her work on the Warm Springs Reservation. This includes all or most of Series I, II, III and V. Series V (Card Files) contains around 35000 lexical files compiled by Hymes as well as David and Kay French and an unidentified researcher. Series III (Research Files) contains fieldnotes, texts and dictionary files. Series I (Correspondence) and IV (Works by Others) also mostly relate to Sahaptin research by others, including Bruce Rigsby (Yakima and Umatilla Sahaptin), Virginia Beavert, and Eugene Hunn.

Description: The Taos materials in the ACLS collection consists of two items in the "Taos" section of the finding aid. One is set of "Taos texts and grammatical notes" (item T1b.3) containing four letters with literal and free translations and grammatical notes, plus 6 texts, most with free translations and notes, plus notes on orthography. There is also a "Sketch of the Taos language" (item T1b.2) concerning morphology and semasiology, plus three letters from an unidentified consultant, all with interlinear and free translation and notes.

Description: The Tarahumara materials in the ACLS collection consist of several items located in the "Tarahumara" section of the finding aid. There is a set of texts with interlinear Spanish translations (item U6a.2), recorded by Wendell Bennett, with a related lexical file (item U6a.1) of 1800+ word slips derived from the texts. Material recorded by Jules Henry consists of 3 field notebooks (item U6a.4) with texts with interlinear translations and biographical information on speakers who provided the stories. Henry's related "Tarahumara materials" (item U6a.3) includes a diverse set of items, including word lists, a draft dictionary, additional texts, a Spanish-Tarahumara newsletter, and a "Cartilla Tarahumara de Lectura" with photomechanical prints depicting housing, utensils, clothing, and social customs.
