Description: William Bright's most significant Cahuilla materials consist of audio recordings of Cahuilla songs and wordlists made between the 1950s and 1980s. Katherine Siva Saubel is identified as a speaker on some, while others contain singing from an unidentified male. These can be found in Series 6 and the Digital Library. In addition are Bright's own interlinear glosses of Cahuilla songs and notes on J. P. Harrington's Cahuilla materials (Series 4), a lexical slip file comparing several Takic languages (Series 5), correspondence (Series 1) and copies of several small publications on Cahuilla language and culture, including a lexicon by Saubel (Series 2).

Description: The Klamath materials in the William Fenton audio collection are located in "Series 8: Klamath Indian Political Texts" and on the first tape in "Series 9: Blackfoot Songs and Dances (plus 1 Klamath tape)." Recordings are "Klamath Tribal Council History," "Treaty of 1864 with Klamath Indians" (including song and discussion of Klamath music), both with Tom Lang; "Conversation on Klamath singing, with one song" and "Conversation on healing and songs" with Ellen Hecote; and Fenton's "Reading of notes on the beginning of factions on the Klamath Reservation" and "Reading of notes on Watson Duffy." Includes some information on Paiute and Fenton's reading of notes on interviewees David Chocktoot and Watson Duffy. Description: The Wintu materials in the Harvey Pitkin Papers are extensive. Subcollection I, Series I, contains notes, notebooks, vocabularies, slip files, texts, manuscripts and phonetic tracings by Jeremiah Curtin in the late 19th century, Roland Dixon, and A.M. Halpern. Series I-B contains Pitkin's grammar slip files and vocabularies collected by Curtin. Series I-C includes Jaime de Angulo's manuscript on the Patwin language, S.A. Barrett's transcriptions and translations of speech and song recordings, Radin's "Grammatical Sketch" and Waterman's notes on Patwin phonetics. Series II-A is rich in materials collected by A.L. Krober. In Subcollection II, Pitkin's field notes are located in Series 2, Subseries 1. Subseries 2 includes Pitkin's extensive notes on his Wintu dictionary, grammar, texts, stories, and music. The manuscript of the dictionary is located in Subseries 3. There is an unpublished 416 page manuscript of stories written in both English and Wintu, songs, and transcriptions in Subseries 4. This section also includes copies of all the extant linguistic material with works by noted linguists such as Curtin, Albert Gatschet, Radin, Halpern, Morris Swadesh, Victor Golla, and J.P. Harrington. Series 6 is comprised of card file slips with comparative analyses by Pitkin of the four languages of the Wintun family.

Description: Mary Haas conducted fieldwork in the early 1950s on Yurok music and language, tapes of which can be found in Series 10, and a brief field notebook with “Mrs. Roberts” in Series 2. In 1958, with the publication of the article “Algonkian-Ritwan: The End of a Controversy”, Mary Haas used her materials on Yurok, Wiyot and Algonquian languages to make a case for their genetic relationship. The vast majority of the remaining Yurok materials in Mary Haas' collection relate to this, including extensive comparative and standalone lexical card files (Series 9) and some correspondence (Series 1).
