Description: The Cheyenne materials in the ACLS collection consist of a large body of material recorded by Kenneth Croft in 1948-1949 (item A3.1, "Cheyenne Material"). They have three main parts: (1) typed and manuscript data in folders consisting of linguistic data and analysis of noun paradigms, syllable and clusters, modes, instrumentals, affixes, prefixes, and suffixes; (2) 6 notebooks recorded in Lame Deer, Montana, with Northern Cheyenne words lists, phrases, and texts. (3) 24 notebooks recorded in El Reno, Oklahoma, with Southern Cheyenne words lists, phrases, paradigms, and texts. The texts include a wide variety of traditional, historical, and autobiographical stories. See also Croft's accompanying audio collection (Mss.Rec.5), listed separately in this guide.

Description: Letter from John Sevier regarding Creek raids and a murder in Chickasaw territory. Second item titled "Talk from Indians to George Golphin, one of the commissioners of Indian affairs" in which the King of Talesy (probably the Creek town of Tálisi) speaks of trade with Pensacola; relations with Chickasaws and Choctaws. In a second speech the King of the Ocksuskeys (probably the Creek town of Okfuski) speaks of Cupitaws (possibly either the Creek town Kasíhta or Kawíta) and Ockjoys (probably Creek town Oktcháyi); describes a belt of wampum.

Description: The Chowan materials in the Frank G. Speck Papers consist of one folder labeled III(7B5c), "Tuscarora -- c. Reading notes on the Chowan (incorporated by Tuscarora)." It consists of one page of reading notes on the Chowans, taken from the North Carolina Colonial Records, regarding encroachments of colonists, incorporation by Tuscaroras in 1733, land sale in 1735. Two pages of reading notes on the Mattamuskeet Indians, 1713-1728, from same source, particularly relating to Tuscarora War and mentioning Coree Indians as well. Three notecards labelled "Tutelo" (taken from General John S. Clark), "Suwanoos" (Shawnees, also taken from Clark), and "Nessoneicks" (taken from Bland, Discovery of New Brittaine).
